TSF 2021 Kentucky DPOY: Gabe Savage

One of the most tenacious defenders South of the Ohio River, Ryle linebacker Gabe Savage was named the TriState Football Kentucky Defensive Player of the Year, as TSF paid tribute to the area’s finest from Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky, Dayton and Southeast Indiana at the Year in Review Show on Monday night, in front of a packed house at the Holy Grail in downtown Cincinnati.
The senior was tackling machine for the Raiders getting in on 154 total tackles (69 solo), with 15 tackles for losses, four sacks and a fumble recovery. Savage also ran for 364 yards and four touchdowns. Those efforts earned him Courier-Journal Second Team All-Kentucky, Class 6A District 6 POY and First Team All-NKY (for a second straight year) honors, as well. He has signed with Army.
Other 2021 finalists included seniors – Jackson Belk (Ryle), Jacob Leicht (Bishop Brossart), Byron May (Rowan County), Colin Smith (Dixie Heights), Trevor Wilson (Covington Catholic) and sophomore Xavier Campbell (Beechwood).
TriStateFootball.com was founded in 2005 and started its postseason awards in 2007. In the 15-year history of this award, Savage becomes just the eighth player to be nominated twice as a TSF Kentucky Defensive Player of the Year finalist joining – Drake Bruns (Highlands) in 2010-’11; Seth Hope (Highlands) in ’12-’13; Sam Burchell (Covington Catholic) in ’12-’13; Adam Derry (Beechwood) in ’17-’18; Michael Mayer (Covington Catholic) in ’17-’18, Brycen Huddleston (Highlands) in ’18-’19 and Tayquan Calloway (Holmes) in ’19-’20.
