2022 Snapshot: Madeira
- Updated: April 25, 2022
Injuries and turnovers were too much to overcome for Madeira last season. The Mustangs lost their last six games and suffered the schools first losing campaign since 2015. Somehow, they still managed to make the playoffs. With a healthy and veteran squad returning the program looks to make the postseason for a record fifth straight year.
Taking care of the ball will be a must if Madeira wants to get back to its winning ways. “We finished the year minus-12 in turnover margin which contributed to our 4-7 record. We had an average of plus-15 in turnover ratio in the previous three seasons which lead to a 21-11 record,” head coach Chris Stewart states.
In the trenches, the Mustangs have size on both sides of the ball. This team should be able to run the ball and put pressure on opposing backfields.
The pieces are there for an outstanding 2022 season to be had. A couple early wins should be enough to give Madeira the confidence it needs to be nuisance in league play and down the stretch this fall.
Division V, Region 20
2021 RECORD: 4-7, 1-6 CHL
COACH: Chris Stewart (25-18 at Madeira, four years; 25-18 overall)
HONOR ROLL
Conner Cravaack, Sr, TE, DE – One of the best Division V two-way players in the state. As a junior, Cravaack had 38 receptions for 476 yards and two touchdowns. Defensively, he was in on 44 total tackles with seven sacks and a fumble recovery to earn OPSWA Division V Third Team All-Ohio honors. The 6-foot-5, 220-pound Cravaack has verbally committed to Akron.
Max Autry, Sr, WR/DB – A breakout performance in 2021 led to OPSWA Division V Third Team All-Ohio (DB) honors for Autry. He had 41 total tackles, an interception, 51 receptions for 700 yards and two touchdown catches.
Aidan Megois, Sr, G/LB – The anchor and a four-year starter on the Mustangs offensive line. Megois was named OPSWA Division V Second Team All-Southwest District (OL) as a junior. He also has 113 total tackles, two-and-a half sacks and a fumble recovery in his career.
Nick Heisser, Sr, RB/LB/P – Split time between running back and linebacker in 2021. Heisser finished with 425 yards and seven touchdowns rushing. On defense, he tallied 59 total tackles. Heisser was also named First Team All-CHL as a punter.
Grant Edgington, Sr, OT/DL – Will play alongside Megois on the o-line. The 6-foot-4, 260-pound Edgington registered 32 total tackles and had one-and-a-half sacks on his way to Honorable Mention All-CHL accolades as a junior.
Justin Matsudo, Sr, OT/K – Missed the last seven games due to a knee injury in 2021. The 6-foot-3, 295-pound Matsudo is looking to bounce back and have a stellar senior season protecting quarterback Peter Breidenbach’s blind side. He was named Honorable Mention All-CHL as a junior.
OTHER RETURNEES
Max Mobley, Sr, OG – A three-year starter who has made great strides in the weight room and that should help the Mustangs running game in 2022.
Luke Browning, Sr, C – Started all 11 games in 2021. Browning is the leader of the Mustangs offensive line.
Carson Cravaack, Sr, WR, LB – Will be a key factor in the Madeira offense. Cravaack started all 11 games at receiver and finished with 11 receptions for 143 yards last fall. He also had 16 total tackles and an interception.
Nate Opichka, Sr, DB – Will be counted on to be a leader in a very experienced secondary. Opichka recorded 42 total tackles and had an interception as a junior.
Mike Cedillo, Sr, DB – Had a breakout season as a junior. Cedillo was third on the team with 53 total tackles and had an interception.
Peter Breidenbach, Jr, QB – Back for his second year as the starting quarterback. Breidenbach led the CHL with 1,477 yards passing which was also the school record for a sophomore. He also ran for 298 yards and accounted for 11 touchdowns (eight pass, three rush).
JJ Hoeffel, Jr, DL – Was thrown into action last year due to some unfortunate injuries. Hoeffel took advantage of his opportunity and finished the year with 20 total tackles.
NEWCOMERS
The Madeira coaching staff is hoping senior RB/LB Griffin Blackburn, sophomore WR/DB Colin Miranda along with juniors WR/DB Aidan Thiele, LB Tyler Griffin, OL/DL AJ Rockwell and OL/DL Finn McCarthy will add depth and possibly even become starters. Blackburn only played in two games last season but showed promise with 133 yards and touchdown rushing versus CHCA in Week 2.
