NKY Round-Up: Simon Kenton survives shootout
- Updated: August 26, 2022
Two high-powered offenses set the table for a great night of Northern Kentucky football this week.
SIMON KENTON 42, HIGHLANDS 40
Simon Kenton and Highlands engaged in a shootout Friday Night. Both squads saw their offenses come to the party and quite was the opposite for the defenses.
Simon Kenton jumped out to an early lead but the Bluebirds fought back to make a game of things by scoring 20 fourth-quarter points but could not get all the way back as Simon Kenton won a 42-20 shootout.
Quarterback Chase Crone led the Pioneers with an outstanding all around effort. Crone rushed 23 times for 135 yards and two touchdowns. He also connected on 7-of-15 passes for 49 yards and two more touchdowns both to Chase Williams.
Highlands aired things out to stay in the game as Brody Benke was 17-of-38 for 158 yards and two touchdowns to pace the Bluebirds’ efforts. He consistently drove his squad down the field where they were able to punch in short runs for scores but it just wasn’t enough.
NO. 15 RYLE 21, CONNER 7
Ryle escaped with a two touchdown win over Conner on Friday night. The Raiders went on the road and handled their business in Hebron.
Kaden Gardner was a star on the field for the Raiders as he was able to cause problems for the Conner defense all night long. His touchdown and two-point conversion were critical in helping the Raiders secure the victory.
As a team, Ryle dominated the game on the ground, doing so by rushing for 220 yards on the ground. The Raiders controlled the game and were able to play it at their tempo to get the win.
NEWPORT CENTRAL CATHOLIC 19, HOLMES 6
Kolton Smith led NCC to victory Friday night. Smith went 8-of-16 for 115 yards and a touchdown to pace the Thoroughbreds to victory.
Demetrick Welch Jr. led the rushing attack for NCC as he ran for 70 yards on 12 carries and Luke Runyon led the team in receiving yards with 45 over his three receptions.
NCC defense was also outstanding. They allowed a first quarter touchdown to Holmes’ running back Curtez Hill, but were able to secure a shutout the rest of the way.
Hill had 75 yards rushing for Holmes as he was a bright spot for their sputtering offense.
