2022 TSF Indiana Team of the Year: East Central
- Updated: February 21, 2023
When the 2022 regular season ended it felt like East Central could make a run for the IHSAA Class 4A state title. The Trojans were battled-tested and had veteran experience and many key positions. The boys from St. Leon were up to the challenge bringing home the school’s third state championship and first since 2017. That feat earned East Central the 2022 TriState Football Indiana Team of the Year, as TSF paid tribute to finest from Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky, Dayton and Southeast Indiana area’s high school gridiron at the Year in Review Show on Monday night, in front of a packed house at the Holy Grail, downtown Cincinnati.
In the season opener, the Trojans handled “rival” Lawrenceburg, who would eventually finish as the Class 3A state runner-up, 38-3. In Week 3, East Central found out what it was going to take to win a title falling to Moeller (13-2), who would go on to be a Ohio Division I state semi-finalist by 30, 43-13.
Over the next nine games the Trojans defense would allow just 54 total points with four shutouts. East Central’s only loss in that span was to Rocalli in the regular season finale, 21-19.
The playoffs started and the Trojans rolled to the school’s 21st Sectional title with an average margin of victory of 45.3 points per game (47.3 to 2.0) over Edgewood, Silver Creek and Martinsville. Two weeks later East Central would avenge its loss to Roncalli taking them down in an overtime thriller, 24-21, to win the school’s fifth semi-state crown. The following week the school would handle New Prairie, 37-7 to bring home the program’s third state championship trophy.
East Central offense averaged 37.6 points and 391.4 yards of total offense (256.7 rushing) per game. The defense gave up just 10.6 points per contest. Head coach Jake Meiners ran his career record to 42-9 in his four years at the helm.
