Dayton Round-Up: Wayne stuns Springfield

With 26 seconds left in the contest, Aaron Scott connected with Jayvin Norman on a trick play 72-yard pass to give Springfield a 22-21 lead over Wayne. The Wildcats appeared on their way to breaking their first two-game losing streak since 2017. Unfortunately the football gods weren’t having any of that.

The Warriors showed they still had life. Junior Gauge Miesse took the ensuing kickoff 83-yards for a touchdown to send the Wayne fans into a frenzy and the visiting Wildcats into a state of shock with their third straight defeat. It was the first time that Springfield has lost three in a row since dropping the final five tilts of 2014.

It was a second half of big plays as all four touchdowns scored (two by each team) went for 66 yards or more. Wayne survived three turnovers by quarterback Tyrell Lewis who accounted for three scores (two pass, one rush). The senior ended the night with 127 yards passing and 46 yards on the ground.

The nights hero, Miesse had 122 all-purpose yard. All but 11 yards (on one reception) came on kickoff and punt returns.  Freshman Jamier Averette-Brown had three receptions for 90 yards and a touchdown for the victors.

Springfield was led by senior Norman who finished the game with 92 yards rushing and receiving. He also found the end zone on a run and on the pass from Scott.
