Dayton Round-Up: Centerville wins GWOC title
- Updated: October 15, 2023
For almost three quarters it looked as if Fairmont was going to knock off league rival Centerville for the first time since 2018. Then the Elks offense caught fire and scored 21 unanswered points in the last 15 minutes of the contest to clench the schools first GWOC championship in five years.
The victory celebration came somewhat as a surprise thanks to a shocking Springboro upset over Wayne. Many had next Friday’s Centerville game at Wayne circled as the game for the GWOC crown but that is a mute-point now with every team in the conference at least two games behind the Elks in the standings with one tilt left.
Drake Wells went 21-28 for 120 yards with a touchdown pass to Quincy Capogna for the victors. Wells also had his first rushing score of the season. The Elks defense was outstanding once again holding their opponent to six points for the third time in the last four weeks. Centerville is allowing 12.4 points per game while holding eight foes to 17 points or fewer.
