NKY Round-Up: Cooper/Highlands set up showdown

Ryle continued their quest for a big school state title and Cooper marched on in our NKY Round-Up.
CLASS 6A
RYLE 43, CENTRAL HARDIN 14
Ryle captured their first region championship since 2010 with a commanding victory over Central Hardin on Friday night. The Raiders broke open a 7-7 ball game and never looked back as they dominated on both sides of the ball.
CLASS 5A
COOPER 56, SOUTHWESTERN 15
Cooper scored 48 unanswered points to pull away from Southwestern and win a region title on Friday night. The Jaguars led 41-7 at the half in a dominating performance. Keagan Maher and Austin Alexander both scored three touchdowns on the night. Ryker Campbell added a pick six and Isaiah Johnson added a score as well.
HIGHLANDS 42, PULASKI COUNTY 18
Quarterback Rio Litmer threw for 320 yards and 4 touchdowns to lead the Bluebirds to a blowout win. Highlands trailed 10-0 before exploding to victory. Highlands had things rolling on both sides of the ball as the defense also came to play. Gabe Williams had two interceptions and Ethan Grimm scored on a pick-six. With the win the Bluebirds set up a massive showdown with Cooper next week.
CLASS 4A
COVINGTON CATHOLIC 31, BOYLE COUNTY 28
Covington Catholic snapped Boyle County’s 32 game win streak and avenged their loss in the state championship a year ago on Friday night. The Colonels advanced by playing a complete game and competing with one of the top teams in the nation. Owen Pitzer scored on a 2-yard rush to give the Colonels the lead with 5:15 remaining and they held on for the victory.
The Colonels led 14-6 at the half as Cash Harney rushed for two scores in the first half. He also threw a touchdown pass in the second half, hitting Oliver Link for an 80-yard touchdown pass. Harney carried the ball 32 time for 324 yards. Ryan Urti added a field goal to produce the final margin.
CLASS 2A
BEECHWOOD 44, MARTIN COUNTY 7
Beechwood led 31-0 after the end of the first quarter and never looked back as they beat Martin County on Friday night. The Beechwood starters were out of the game by halftime and the game was never in question as the Tigers advanced in dominating fashion. (COMPLETE RECAP)
CLASS 1A
KENTUCKY COUNTRY DAY 14, NEWPORT 12
Newport trailed 7-6 at the half and could not overcome a tough defense as they fell to Kentucky Country Day on Friday night. The two teams has a scoreless second quarter as the game as a defensive battle all the way and points were hard to come by. Newport outgained Kentucky Country Day 359-216 but could not cash in on points when they were most needed.
CAMPBELLSVILLE 27, NEWPORT CENTRAL CATHOLIC 24
NewCath lost a ten-point lead in the final minutes of the fourths quarter as they could not put away Campbellsville in the 1A region final. It is the second straight year that the Eagles have beaten the visiting Thoroughbreds by less than a touchdown in Round 3 of the playoffs.
