The calendar hit number and conference play is getting into full swing. Plus we got an interstate classic between perennial powers as Moeller hosted Trinity.
NO. 3 LAKOTA WEST 38, NO. 18 HAMILTON 6
The Firebirds used a 21-point first quarter to deal the Big Blue a big blow early on as they rolled to a 38-6 GMC road victory.
Lakota West (2-1, 2-0 GMC) controlled the game up front on both sides of the ball and defensively they were too much to handle. Hamilton (1-2, 1-1) was a combined 1-of-11 on third and fourth down. Sophomore Judah Blair turned his first career interception into six points with a 17-yard interception for a touchdown to help get things off to a fast start.
Senior Tyson Davis stole the headlines on offense with nine catches for 180 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Jackson Smith finished with 214 yards and a TD pass on 14-of-23 attempts. Kenyon Norman led Lakota West with 105 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries.
Andre Bailey scored the lone touchdown for the Big Blue, finishing with a game-high 21 carries for 120 yards.
NO. 2 MOELLER 24, LOUISVILLE TRINITY 21
There is a ton of hardware on the table when Moeller and Trinity tangle. The two schools have combined for 39 state titles. That’s why it came as no surprise that the game turned out to be one of the better contests of the evening.
It didn’t start off great for the Crusaders though. The Shamrocks got out of the gate with a nine-play, 65-yard drive to take a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter and went up 14-0 in the final couple minutes of the second quarter on a 96-yard TD drive before Moeller (2-1) got a an 40-yard field goal right before half.
From that point on it was all Big Moe. After being held to just 80 yards and appearing to twist his ankle in the first half, Matthew Potnatoski went 4-for-4 for 43 yards, including a 26-yard TD strike to Tyler Josleyn to get in the end zone on their first drive of the second half.
After a Carter Cuozzo interception, Ponatsoki would strike again with a 11-yard TD pass to Reggie Watson less than three minutes later to give Moeller a 17-14 lead after three quarters. The senior would add a third TD pass to Sam Hamilton from 18 yards out. Trinity would add another TD, but it wouldn’t be enough as Moeller would hold on.
NO. 23 MASON 40, NO. 9 LAKOTA EAST 35
The fireworks carried over from Labor Day weekend as Mason welcomed Lakota East in a GMC clash and these conference foes lit up the scoreboard.
The two teams combined for 75 points and 827 yards of offense. De’Angelo Birch had the biggest stats of all to lead Mason (1-2, 1-1 GMC) in their upset effort. The senior dual-threat quarterback rushed for 214 yards and four scores on 28 carries. He added 59 yards through the air in the win.
Lakota East (2-1, 1-1) was paced by quarterback Nile Knutson, who finished with 327 yards, three touchdowns and an interception on 25-of-27 passing.
