NewCath Takes District Title With 40-12 Win Over Newport

NEWPORT, Kentucky – Newport Central Catholic clinched its first district title since 2015 with a 40-12 victory over its crosstown rival Newport Wildcats at Newport Stadium.

The Thoroughbreds took the game’s opening kickoff and milked a five and 1/2 minute drive. Caleb Jefferson caught an eight-yard pass in the corner of the end zone from quarterback Paul Kremer for a 7-0 lead.

As a result, Newport did not have a chance to touch the ball until the 6:21 mark of the opening quarter. The Wildcats were able to cross midfield with a 27-yard reception by Tyler Porter. However, the drive stalled giving the ball back to NewCath at its own 30-yard line on downs.

The Thoroughbreds marched down the field on a seven-play possession that was dominated by running back Hezekiah Miller. Miller ripped off gains of 17 on the ground and a 37 through the air before scoring from the three-yard line early in the second quarter.

NewCath scored once more in the first half on a 37-yard pass and catch form Kremer to wide receiver Aubrey Posey. Posey earned the game’s most valuable player honors from the Newport Firefighters thanks to hauling in seven catches for 147 yards and two touchdowns.

The Thoroughbreds dominated the first half offensive statistics by out gaining Newport in total yards 235-63 on its way to a 20-0 halftime lead.

Posey scored his second touchdown on a 27-yard fade route early in the third quarter.

Miller, who carried the ball 15 times for 102 yards on the night, stretched the NewCath to 33-0 with four-yard plunge into the end zone.

Newport avoided the shutout early in the fourth quarter when quarterback Kaleel Davis ran the ball in from the two-yard line. Davis was one of the lone offensive bright spots for the Wildcats as he ran for 41 of the team’s 63 total yards in the first half.

The Wildcats recovered an onside kick near midfield after the Davis touchdown. This helped setup Samari Miller catching a 3-yard touchdown pass from backup quarterback David Veselka cutting the deficit to 33-12.

Miller officially turned the lights out on the party with a 52-yard touchdown sprint, his third score of the night giving NewCath the victory and the district title.
