On Tuesday evening, Beechwood quarterback Cam Hergott announced that he would return in 2021-2022 for his senior season once again. The Beechwood school board approved KY SB-128. Hergott will use the loophole for the purpose of pursuing a Division I FBS scholarship. He was currently committed to Akron as a Preferred Walk-on.

The KY SB-128 bill “allows public high school students currently enrolled in Kentucky to request to use the 2021-2022 school year as a supplemental school year to retake and supplement coursework already completed; require local boards of education to either approve or deny all requests; allow Kentucky nonpublic schools to also implement supplemental school years; ensure students utilizing supplemental school years are not ineligible to participate in KHSAA activities,” according to legiscan.com.

In 2021 Hergott was the catalyst for a Beechwood (10-2) team that won its second state title in the last three seasons (with him as the starter) and fourth in the last five years. He amassed 3,545 yards of total offense (2,467 pass, 1,078 rush) and accounted for 41 touchdowns (26 pass, 15 rush) as the Tigers captured the school’s 15th state championship. That performance earned Hergott the pinnacle of honors, KFCA Kentucky Mr. Football. He was also named the TriState Football Kentucky Offensive Player of the Year, Class 2A, District 6 Player of the Year, First Team NKFCA All-NKY and First Team All-TSF.

Despite all the accolades Hergott failed to receive any FBS Division I offers. He heads into 2022 with 6,214 yards passing, 2,376 yards rushing, 65 touchdown tosses and 34 scores on the ground, in his career.
