2022 Snapshot: Badin
- Updated: April 7, 2022
They were one of the “feel good” stories of 2021. Badin had its first undefeated regular season in 40 years and was in the state championship game for the first time since 1990. The Rams now look to build upon their state runner-up finish. It won’t be easy but the way this program has performed under head coach Nick Yordy accomplishing that feat will not be surprising.
“We lost a really good senior class that took this program to a level it has not been to in some time. We are hoping that this year’s group can step up and fill some big shoes. We are hoping the extra experience that our team got last year can lead to success on both sides of the ball this year,” Yordy states.
Over the past two seasons Badin is a combined 22-2. Defense has fueled that prosperity. In that span, the Rams have allowed just 8.75 points per game, 19 times opponents have scored 14 points or fewer, 11 have been held to seven points or less with five shutouts.
“The strength of our teams has always been our defense. They have played great the past few years. We rely and feed off their energy,” Yordy says. Expect that trend to continue despite new faces filling key roles. Badin will be tough to take down again in 2022.
Division III, Region 12
2021 RECORD: 14-1, 4-0 GCL Co-ed (Division III state runner-up)
COACH: Nick Yordy (43-15 at Badin, five years; 43-15 overall)
HONOR ROLL
Braedyn Moore, Sr, WR/DB – One of the most talented players in school history and best defensive backs in Ohio. Moore has not come off the field for the past two seasons. As a junior, he had 61 receptions, 655 receiving yards, four touchdown catches, 1,138 all-purpose yards, 54 total tackles, seven interceptions and two pick-sixes on his way to OPSWA Division III Second Team All-Ohio (WR) honors. He has 10 career interceptions. Moore’s offers include Akron, Boston College, Central Michigan, Cincinnati, UConn, Duke, Eastern Kentucky, Eastern Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Kent State, Minnesota, Pitt and West Virginia.
Carson Cheek, Jr, S – Was excellent in his varsity debut last fall. Cheek tallied 67 total tackles, snared seven interceptions and returned two of them for touchdowns. That effort earned him OPSWA Division III First Team All-Ohio accolades.
OTHER RETURNEES
Carter Russo, Sr, RB – Battled through some injuries as a junior but is poised for a big year. Russo has 605 yards and nine touchdowns rushing in a Rams uniform.
Quinn Brennan, Jr, WR – The Rams need Brennan to step up as a playmaker on offense. He had five receptions for 43 yards as a junior.
Jackson Martin, Sr, DE – The only returning d-lineman. Badin will need Martin to lead the defense. He registered 68 total tackles and a sack in 2021.
Kaden Starks, Sr, LB – A returning starter who had a great junior campaign. Starks recorded 114 total tackles and four sacks a year ago.
NEWCOMERS
A junior class that includes QB Alex Ritzie, RB Zach Yordy, WR/LB Drew Enginger, LB Nate Ostendorf, DE Tyler Abner and OL Drew Vocke now get the opportunity to step up and become integral parts of the starting lineup. Ritzie made his first varsity start in last season’s state championship game. Ostendorf had 23 total tackles as a sophomore. Yordy ran for his first two touchdowns versus Carroll last fall.
