2022 Snapshot: Northwest

Despite being hampered by injuries and losing its last six games in 2021, Northwest has plenty to be optimistic about. Even with the skid, the Knights fell just short of making the playoffs last fall. Flip a two-point loss to Alter and/or a three-point defeat versus Mount Healthy and the boys from Pippin Road would’ve been playing in November. Head coach Lee Johnson and his squad are ready to turn things around in 2022.

“Our entire secondary returns after a good year defending the pass. Diego Yun returns at quarterback to lead an offense that scored 34-plus points in each of his starts,” Johnson states.

Northwest will look for new blood in the trenches to protect Yun and keep opposing offenses off the field. The Knights must replace three starters on the offensive line and two on the defensive line.

Standing toe-to-toe against a schedule that is loaded with teams that play smash-mouth football is a must if Northwest wants to get back to the playoffs. It will all come down to a desire to want it more for the Knights.

Division III, Region 12
2021 RECORD: 3-7, 0-3 SWOC
COACH: Lee Johnson (22-37 at Northwest, six years; 22-37 overall)

HONOR ROLL
DeAveon Perkins, Sr, WR – Has great ball skills with big play potential. Perkins was named First Team All SWOC after catching 15 balls for 278 yards and two touchdowns as a junior.

Nate Love, Sr, DB – Plays the ball well with his great hips and speed. Love led the team in pass break-ups and finished with 31 total tackles as a junior. He was named Honorable Mention All-SWOC.

OTHER RETURNEES
Jibril Bradford, Sr, LG – Has great footwork and gets off the ball extremely well. The 6-foot-3, 244-pound Bradford can climb to the second level and has a big-time motor. He looks to return to the form that made him a Second Team All-SWOC selection as a sophomore.

Lesean Dickerson, Sr, LB – One of the leaders of the Northwest defense. Dickerson has more than 80 total tackles in his career.

Jamauree Thrasher, Sr, WR – Returns after being a key contributor on offense at wide receiver and on defense at free safety.  Thrasher has three touchdown receptions in his career.

Malachi Snow, Sr, WR – Has great speed that will be used in the secondary and on offense.

Diego Yun, Sr, QB – It was a small sample size, but Yun showed an explosive dimension to the Knights offense at quarterback, especially with his legs.

Kaleb Jones, Jr, RB – Looks to carry more of the load in the upcoming season after finishing second on the team in rushing in 2021. Jones ran for 491 yards and five touchdowns as a sophomore.

NEWCOMERS
Senior TE/DL Mike Jones, junior RB/LB Stephaun McDaniel along with sophomores LB/DE Erick Morris, Jr. and RB/LB Kinxton Hill will get every chance to crack the starting lineup. Morris, Jr. finished his freshmen year strong with solid performances the last two weeks of the season.
