2022 Snapshot: Piqua
- Updated: June 20, 2022
When you start looking around at teams that have the tangibles and intangibles to win a regional or state championships, Piqua is one of those squads that checks off many of the boxes. Last fall, the Indians fell just short of winning their first regional title since 2006 and seventh in school history. They lost to eventual state champion Winton Woods in the regional final for their only loss of the year. Winners of 16 consecutive league contests heading into 2022 this program is ready to take another leap forward.
Piqua is an experienced squad that has been through the wars and knows exactly what it takes to win in big games. The special teams have the pieces to be “elite.” They could be the difference of advancing deep into the playoffs. The seniors on the Indians defense have combined to go 14-0 while allowing just 6.7 points per game with five shutouts versus MVL rivals the past two years.
This team has the motivation to bring home hardware while stamping its distinct mark on the program. More often than not, the juniors that follow a senior class that had a memorable season, do surprisingly well. All signs point to that being the case for the Class or 2023 Indians.
Piqua matches up favorably with everyone on its schedule. Going undefeated in the regular season for a third straight year is not out of the question. Accomplishing that goal will come down to focus. If the Indians take care of business, they should be in a great position to snag one of the top seeds in the playoffs.
In an ideal world, Piqua would love to avenge last year’s loss to Winton Woods and capture the regional title. Making that happen won’t be easy. The Indians are going to get everyone’s best shot. Unlike last season, Piqua now become the hunted once the playoffs start. Those other 15 schools know exactly what this team is capable of. It is now up to the Indians to go out and validate that respect.
