2022 Snapshot: Roger Bacon
- Updated: June 27, 2022
Things are going as well as they ever have for the Roger Bacon football program. The Spartans have won three consecutive Miami Valley Conference championships, been to the playoffs a school record three consecutive years as well as being combined 29-6 in that span. Maintaining that success isn’t going to be easy as Roger Bacon gets bumped up to the incredibly deep Division IV, Region 16 from Division V, Region 20.
“The Spartans are looking forward to another great season in the MVC and at some point, Roger Bacon will win its 500th game in school history. We are sitting at 498 wins presently,” head coach Mike Blaut states.
Blaut’s squad returns seven starters on offense and eight on defense. Many of those are on the offensive and defensive lines. Pair that with the overall team speed and quickness at the skills positions, which is a huge strength of the Spartans, you have the foundation to make good things happen.
Roger Bacon does have some questions to be answered. “We need to replace a two-year starter at quarterback and a one-year, all state running back. Depth in some areas are a concern as well,” Blaut says.
The Spartans experience should carry them back to the postseason and hopefully hosting a first round home game. From there Roger Bacon takes a step up into Region 16 football royalty which now stands in the way of a second regional title in three years for the Spartans. Reigning Division IV state champion Clinton-Massie, Wyoming, Indian Hill, Taft, Waverly, Springfield Shawnee as well as former GCL Co-ed rivals Alter, McNicholas and Fenwick are all capable of bringing home the regional crown. The battles in November are going to be epic for Roger Bacon.
Division IV, Region 16
2021 RECORD: 9-3, 4-0 MVC Scarlet
HEAD COACH: Mike Blaut (43-32 at Roger Bacon, seven years, 43-32 overall)
HONOR ROLL
Beamer Walker, Sr, WR/DB/RS – Coach Blaut calls Walker “the best cover corner in the city.” He is arguably the best player in the TriState Football coverage area that doesn’t have a Division I FBS college offer. Walker was named OPSWA Division V Second Team All-Ohio (DB) as a junior after getting in on 26 total tackles and snaring three interceptions. He also had 12 receptions for 215 yards, averaged 20.4 on 14 punt returns and scored a touchdown in all three of Roger Bacon’s playoff games (two rec, one PR). They were his only three scores of the year. Walker has offers from South Dakota, Findlay, Fairmont State, Tiffin, Charleston and Notre Dame College.
Kent Guyer, Sr, LB – The heart-and-soul of the defense. Guyer was a OPSWA Division V Second Team All-Southwest District (DB) selection last fall. He has 112 total tackles, a sack and two fumble recoveries in his career.
Brogen Weathers, Sr, OL/DL – A leader on both sides of the line. Weathers recorded 33 total tackles, had a sack, forced a fumble and recovered two fumbles as a junior. He was named Second Team All-MVC Scarlet for his work.
Jimmy Mumper, Sr, QB/DB – A proven commodity at linebacker who will also compete for the starting quarterback job. As a junior, Mumper registered 47 total tackles, forced two fumbles and had four interceptions on his way to Second Team All-MVC Scarlet accolades. He also threw for 226 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Timyone Andrew, Sr, WR/DB – Will contribute heavily on both sides of the ball. Look for Andrew to post some big numbers at receiver. He was named Honorable Mention All-MVC Scarlet last season after hauling in eight receptions for 99 yards, tallying 21 total tackles with an interception. Andrew has an offer from Notre Dame College.
OTHER RETURNEES
Zach Meister, Sr, OL/DL – The coaching staff is expecting big things out of this senior. Meister should have breakout campaign.
Allon Hill, Sr, OL/DL – A vital cog in the trenches for the Spartans. The 6-foot-3, 245-pound Hill picked up his first offer in May from Ohio Dominican.
Charles Hawkins, Jr, RB/DB – Had a solid varsity debut in the Spartans secondary as a sophomore. Hawkins was in on 32 total tackles, with a forced fumble and an interception. He will see more opportunities running the football this season.
NEWCOMERS
Sophomores OL/DL Mike Thomas and QB Landen Murphy have a chance to make a real impact this fall. Murphy appeared in four games, throwing for 71 yards as a freshman. He will compete with Mumper to be the starter under center.
