2022 Snapshot: Summit Country Day

Quietly, Summit Country Day has built itself a very respectable football program. The Silver Knights have gone to the playoffs nine times in the last 12 years. Now they look to get back to the postseason for a fourth consecutive campaign.

The road back to Week 11 won’t be easy. Summit Country Day is not a particularly big team along in the trenches. They are going to have to win with technique and speed. The good news for the Silver Knights is that they have “quicks” and experience at the skills positions. They will depend on those veterans to get them to the finish line.

The schedule features six teams that had winning records in 2021. Fortunately, several of those squads are rebuilding and SCD must take advantage of those situations. There will be little margin of error but expect head coach Dave Wirth to have his Silver Knights well prepared to handle and combat what is thrown their way.

Division V, Region 20
2021 RECORD: 4-5, 2-2 MVC Scarlet
HEAD COACH: Dave Wirth (4-5 at Summit Country Day, one year; 89-78 overall, 15 years)

HONOR ROLL
Jake Carrico, Sr, WR/DB – A valuable cog on both sides of the ball. Carrico racked up 1,063 all-purpose yards, had 34 receptions for 595 yards receiving, seven touchdown catches, 31 total tackles, one sack and five interceptions as a junior. He was named OPSWA Division V Second Team All-Southwest District (WR). Carrico has offers from Wittenberg and Mount St. Joseph.

Alex Davis, Sr, QB – The man that makes the Silver Knights offense hum. Davis amassed 2,026 yards of total offense (1,378 pass, 648 rush) and accounted for 27 touchdowns (16 pass, 11 rush) as a junior. He was named OPSWA Division V Honorable Mention All-Southwest District for his work. Davis has offers from Mount St. Joseph, Otterbein and Centre.

Erik Deal, Sr, RB/DB – We expect to see the “real” Deal in 2022. Deal has all-district potential. He was a Second Team All-MVC Scarlet selection after running for 471 yards, with four trips to the end zone, 10 total tackles, a fumble recovery and an interception as a junior.

OTHER RETURNEES
Donovan Matthews, Jr, WR/DB – A healthy Matthews should put up very productive numbers this fall. He has 23 receptions in his career.

Ben Jacob, Sr, RB/DB – Will be a factor on both sides of the ball. Jacob ran for 178 yards, had one score on the ground, six receptions for 63 yards and 14 total tackles in 2021.

Braeden Austin, Sr, WR/DB – Settled into his role at receiver quite nicely as a junior. Austin had 14 receptions for 144 yards and a touchdown. He has an offer from Mount St. Joseph.

Graham Hodge, Jr, OL/DL – Is going to be called upon to be the leader of young and “green” offensive and defensive lines.

Cayleb Walters, So, WR/DB – Was solid in his varsity debut. Walters finished his freshman year with 12 receptions, 157 receiving yards, one touchdown catch and 13 total tackles.
