2023 Snapshot: Conner
- Updated: May 5, 2023
One team that is eager to turn the page to 2023 is Conner. The Cougars are coming off their first nine loss season since 2007 and just fourth losing campaign in the last 12 years.
Head Coach Dave Trosper loves the discipline his team has shown during this offseason. They will need that focus on Friday nights versus a schedule that features six teams that won at least six games in 2022.
Conner also needs a boost offensively. The Cougars scored just 90 points last fall. They were shutout three times and only posted 10 points overt the teams last five games, all losses. A strong and physical offensive line should help rectify the scoring woes come August. The rushing attack should be vastly improved.
The defense will be a huge benefactor if Conner runs the ball effectively. The less the defense is on the field the tougher this squad will be to beat. If they can make that happen the Cougars will post another winning season for Trosper.
Class 5A, District 6
2022 RECORD: 2-9, 1-3 Class 5A, District 5
COACH: Dave Trosper (99-83 at Cooper, 16 years, 112-110 overall, 21 years)
TOP RETURNEES
Ben Fay, Sr, WR/TE/LB – The heart-and-soul of the Conner football team. The 6-foot-5, 220-pound Fay has 116 total tackles and a sack in his career. Look for him to play a bigger role on offense this fall, especially in the red zone.
Elian Ruzindana, Sr, WR/DB – The leader of the Cougars secondary. Ruzidana tallied 42 total tackles and had a pair of interceptions in his first year as a starter in 2022.
Dylan Stewart, Jr, OL/DL – With a 6-foot-5, 290-pound frame and an 80″ wingspan it’s easy to see why “Stewie” is one of the area’s top o-linemen in the Class of 2025. He has an offer from Eastern Kentucky.
Boden Roberts, Jr, OL/DL – Teams with Stewart to make the Cougars very formidable up front for the next two seasons. Roberts stands 6-foot-5 and weighs 250-pounds.
Andrew Herron, Jr, K – Is blossoming into one of the best kickers in the Bluegrass state. Herron connected on 12/12 extra points and 2/5 FGs field goals for 18 kicking points as a sophomore.
NEWCOMERS
Sophomores RB Dion Abernathy and WR/LB Ayden Depenbrock will bring athleticism and electricity to the varsity level. Cougars fans caught of glimpse of how special Abernathy might become after he ran for 235 yards (second most in 2022) in eight games as a freshman.
