2018 TSF Kentucky Player of the Year finalists

It’s hail to the seniors for the 2018 Kentucky Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year finalists. Twelve of the 15 players are seniors. For just the second time in the 12-year history of these awards there are no quarterbacks amongst the OPOY finalists (also happened ’07). Michael Mayer (Covington Catholic) and Adam Derry (Beechwood) become the 21st and 22nd players to be named Kentucky POY finalists twice.
Here is a look at the 2018 TriState Football Kentucky Player of the Year finalists.
Kentucky Offensive Player of the Year finalists
Logan Castleman (Beechwood), Sr, RB/DB – A four-year starter and member of the most successful senior class in Beechwood (12-2) history. The Tigers have won three straight state title, were state runner-up when Castleman was a freshman and have a combined record of 51-7 (.879 win %) with him in the lineup. Castleman can change a game in all phases. He ran for 1,694 yards, caught 15 passes for 133 yards, had six takeaways (four INT, two FR) including two pick sixes and 34 total touchdowns (28 rush, four rec, two IR). That effort earned Castleman, CJ (Courier-Journal) Third Team All-Kentucky (DB), First Team All-NKY (P), Second Team All-NKY (RB) and First Team All-TSF (ATH) accolades. His career numbers at Beechwood show how well-rounded he was with 2,2199 yards rushing, 99 receptions for 1,331 yards, 12 interceptions, 208 interception return yards and 70 total touchdowns (42 rush, 24 rec, two KR, two IR). Castleman has committed to play baseball at Wright State.
Jack Coldiron (Covington Catholic), Sr, WR/LB – The extremely athletic Coldiron starred on both sides of the ball. He averaged 25.5 yards on 26 receptions for 664 yards with sevent touchdowns for the Colonels offense. On defense he was in on 41 total tackles with 12.5 tackles for losses, one-and-a-half sacks and two interceptions earning CJ First Team All-Kentucky (LB), First Team All-NKY (WR), Second Team All-NKY (LB) and First Team All-TSF (WR) honors. Coldiron a Miami (OH) signee finishes his career with 71 receptions for 1,776 yards, averaged 25.0 per reception and a school record 20 touchdown catches.
Reid Jolly (Campbell County), Sr, WR/SS – Used his size to his advantage in garnering CJ Honorable Mention All-Kentucky (WR), First Team All-NKY (WR & DB) and Second Team All-TSF (DB) acclaim. Jolly hauled in 63 receptions for 941 yards, had nine touchdown catches and a pair of interceptions. Finished his Career as a Camel with 105 receptions, 1,444 receiving yards, 15 touchdown catches and four interceptions.
Travon Mason (Lloyd), Sr, RB – Named KFCA Class 2A, District 6 POY, First Team All-NKY (RB) and Honorable Mention All-TSF after running for 1,690 yards and 21 touchdowns. Mason ran for 3,998 yards and 42 touchdowns at the varsity level.
Casey McGinness (CovCath), Sr, RB – Shattered the Covington Catholic (14-1) record books with 2,140 yards rushing and 35 touchdowns rushing to earn KFCA Class 5A, District 5 POY, CJ Third Team All-Kentucky, First Team All-NKY and Second Team All-TSF accolades. He also had 2,765 all-purpose yards with 23 receptions for 341yards and five touchdown catches. Is the Colonels all-time leader with 5,121 yards rushing and total touchdowns with 85 (74 rush, 10 rec, one KR).
Quincy Perrin (Scott), Jr, RB – Despite running behind a depleted and undersized offensive line Perrin still ran for 1,392 yards, haul in eight receptions for 108 yards and make 21 trips to the end zone (19 rush, two rec). He was named First Team All-NKY and Honorable Mention All-TSF. Perrin heads into his senior year 3,273 yards and 39 touchdowns rushing in an Eagles uniform.
Jon Sergent (Simon Kenton), Sr, RB – Churned out 2,260 all-purpose yards (1,288 rush, 333 rec., 639 ret) and found the end zone 25 times (19 rush, three rec, two KR, one PR) to earn Second Team All-NKY (RB) and Third Team All-TSF (RET) accolades. Sergent finished his career with 3,904 all-purpose yards, 2,510 yards 47 total touchdowns (39 rush, four rec, three KR, one PR) in a Pioneers uniform.
Christian Webster (Conner), Sr, RB – A consistent producer as Conner (9-4) was one of the most pleasant surprises in the Bluegrass State. Webster ran for 1,315 yards, had 14 receptions for 186 yards and scored 15 times (14 rush, one rec) on his way to being named the Class 6A, District 5 POY and Honorable Mention All-TSF.
Kentucky Defensive Player of the Year finalists
JJ Courtney (Simon Kenton), Sr, DL – The motor that kept the Simon Kenton (10-3) defense humming. The Pioneers were a combined 32-7 in Courtney’s three years as a starter. He was named CJ Honorable Mention All-Kentucky, KFCA Class 6A District 6 POY, First Team All-NKY and Second Team All-TSF after recording 98 total tackles, 16.0 sacks, 20 tackles for losses and 35-yard scoop and score. Courtney finishes his career with 229 total tackles, 20.5 sacks, 30 tackles for losses, a pick six and fumble recovery for a score
Adam Derry (Beechwood), Sr, DL – A two-time TSF Kentucky DPOY finalist. Derry was also named CJ Second Team All-Kentucky (OL), First Team All-NKY (DL) and Third Team All-TSF this past season for the Cass 1A state champion Tigers. He has signed with Middle Tennessee State.
Grant Grubbs (Walton-Verona), Sr, LB – Tallied 141 total tackles (112 solo), had 26.5 tackles for losses, seven-and-a-half sacks, with two fumble recoveries and an interception for state semi-finalist, Walton-Verona (11-3). Grubbs was named the KFCA Class 2A District 5 POY and Honorable Mention All-TSF for his work. He finishes his career with 334 total tackles.
Brycen Huddleston (Highlands), Jr, LB – Emerged as a leader of the Highlands (10-3) defense this past fall. Huddleston had two sacks, a fumble recovery and an interception on his way to CJ Honorable Mention All-Kentucky, First Team All-NKY and Honorable Mention All-TSF.
Kyle Kelly (Newport Central Catholic), Sr, LB – A CJ Third Team All-Kentucky selection, Kelly joins his brothers Mark (’07, ’08) and Chris (’10) as Kentucky POY finalists. Kelly has Signed with Ohio University.
Tanner Lawrence (Campbell County), Sr, DL – Mr. Dependable and a three-year starter for the Camels, Lawrence was named CJ Honorable Mention All-Kentucky, First Team All-NKY and Honorable Mention All-TSF.
Michael Mayer (Covington Catholic), Jr, TE/LB – One of the most highly recruited players to come out of Northern Kentucky in years. Mayer caused havoc on both sides of the ball. He finished with 46 receptions for 1,029 yards, averaged 22.3 per reception and had 10 touchdown catches on offense. Defensively, Mayer was in on 98 total tackles, with three sacks, 20 tackles for losses, forced four fumbles, recovered four fumbles and had a 76-yard pick six on his way to CJ Second Team All-Kentucky (TE), First Team All-NKY (TE & LB) and First Team All-NKY (LB) honors. Mayer has verbally committed to Notre Dame.
