Player Spotlight: Kel Hawkins

In 2020, Kel Hawkins became a starter in the Dixie Heights secondary for the first time. He took to the role like a fish to water. His uncanny ability to track down the ball saw him lead the state in interceptions with eight (with 128 return yards and a pick-six). The effort earned him AP Honorable Mention All-Kentucky as a junior.

Hawkins was a menace to opposing quarterbacks especially the ones at Ryle. The Colonels pickpocket had a pair of two interception games against the Raiders. He also had three other picks against two quarterbacks that won state championships.

The versatile Hawkins also reeled in 34 receptions for 426 yards and a pair of scores. He has 53 receptions for 658 yards and six touchdowns in his career.

Speed is the name of the game for the 6-foot-1, 190-pound Hawkins. He runs a 4.46 in the 40-yard dash and has “mad” closing skills on defense.

With a year left and having already established himself on both sides of the ball, Hawkins’ stock is on the rise. Hawkins got his first offer from Kentucky Wesleyan College in late March. Expect other schools will follow for fear that they are missing out on a special player and they will be correct in that assessment.
