2021 Snapshot: CCPA
- Updated: June 29, 2021
To see how far CCPA has come in two years under head coach Jeremy Pflug is simply amazing. Pflug inherited a program that went 0-9 in 2018 and had lost 14 straight games. The Lions have turned things around in a hurry, under his tutelage. They have made the playoffs in each of the last two years and won their first ever postseason contest in 2020. It looks like there are great things on the horizon, for this program.
“We will be led by 14 seniors who are hungry to make their last 40 quarters memorable. We have depth at the skills positions and continuity on the offensive line. This will be a team to watch throughout the 2021 season,” Pflug states.
CCPA will be untested at wide receiver, With star quarterback Mark Smith leading the way he should make his new pass catchers feel at ease, sooner rather than later.
After four years in the Miami Valley Conference Gray division the Lions move back to the Cincinnati Metro Athletic Conference. CCPA will play in the Blue division with Shroder (Division IV), Gamble Montessori (Division VI), Dayton Christian (Division VI) and Hillcrest (Division VII). With just four league games, CCPA can challenge themselves in their non-conference schedule.
Where the Lions really need players to step up is on the defensive line. CCPA must become tough in the trenches especially in the playoffs. Region 28 has some upper echelon schools, Marion Local, Tri-Village, Fort Loramie, New Miami, Riverside and even Fayetteville-Perry that can light up the scoreboards with their very potent offensive attacks. If Pflug’s squad wants to make a deep run in November they will need to be vastly improved up front.
Division VII, Region 28
2020 RECORD: 4-4, 3-2 MVC Gray
COACH: Jeremy Pflug (12-7 at CCPA, two years; 42-18 overall, six years)
TOP RETURNEES
Mark Smith, Sr, QB/S – One of the top Division VII players in the state. Smith was named OPSWA Division VII Second Team All-Ohio, as a junior. He was a Division VII First Team All-Ohio and Southwest District Offensive Player of the Year honoree, as a sophomore. Smith has amassed 4,995 yards of total offense (3,348 pass, 1,647) and accounted for 60 touchdowns (40 pass, 20 rush), in his career.
Jeff Ellis, Sr, LB – A leader of the Lions defense. He will be the tone-setter on that side of the ball. Ellis is a two-time Second Team All-MVC Gray selection.
Derrick Blount, Jr, QB/OLB – Heads into his junior year as a two-time Second Team All-MVC Gray performer. The ceiling is high for Blount over his final two campaigns.
Terry Bishop, So, RB/LB – Friday night lights weren’t too big for Bishop, as a freshman. He ran for 122 yards, had 13 receptions for 106 yards, two touchdown catches, four-and-a-half sacks, forced two fumbles and recovered two fumbles. He was named Second Team All-MVC Gray for his work.
Traeunte Andrews, Sr, LB – Will provide senior leadership on defense. Andrews recorded five sacks on his way to Second Team All-MVC Gray accolades, as a junior.
Camdon Wilborn, So, OL/DL – A pleasant surprise as a freshman, Wilborn will be a staple on the line for the Lions over the next three seasons. He was named Honorable Mention All-MVC Gray as a freshman.
Donald Bailey, Sr, TE/DE – Can cause havoc at end, on both sides of the ball. Bailey heads into his junior year with 30 receptions, 345 yards three touchdown catches, one-and-a-half sacks and an interception, in his career.
Isaiah McConnal, Jr, WR/DE – Back after a year hiatus. McConnal had 20 receptions for 160 yards and a touchdown on his way to Second Team All-MVC Gray acclaim, as a freshman.
NEWCOMERS
Seniors WR Kenny Wright and WR Amiere Crump add much needed depth and competition at receiver. Pflug is hoping that they develop and have a season like Derrick Crutchfield did Second Team All-Ohio), in his first year of playing varsity at the same position, in 2020.
