2022 Snapshot: Edgewood
It is one last go around in the SWOC for Edgewood. The Cougars are leaving the league for the SWBL after this season. They are hoping to ride off in style by winning back-to-back conference titles and five of the past seven crowns before their departure.
Edgewood finished 2021 as one of the hottest teams in Southwest Ohio having won nine in a row before falling by seven points in the third round of the playoffs to Piqua. With a solid group of players returning from that run the Cougars seemed destined to pick up where they left off. In fact, this squad has the potential to be even better than they were a year ago.
The Cougars bring back their top running back and three best receivers. That group produced 67.2% of the team’s total yards from scrimmage in 2021. On defense, three of the teams top four tacklers return. That trio also combined for 15 of Edgewood’s 28 takeaways last season. With a foundation like that it is easy to see why Trenton will be rocking in 2022.
Division II, Region 8
2021 RECORD: 9-3, 5-0 SWOC
COACH: Scott Clemmons (60-49 at Edgewood, first year; 60-49 overall)
HONOR ROLL
Brick Barker, Sr, DB – The leader of the Cougars secondary and a three-year starter. Barker is coming off a magnificent junior campaign where he recorded 97 total tackles, had an interception, forced two fumbles and recovered four fumbles of which he returned three for touchdowns. That effort earned him OPSWA Division II Second Team All-Southwest District honors. Barker has 152 total tackles, four forced fumbles, six fumble recoveries, two interceptions and three scoop-and-scores in a Cougars uniform.
Jake Valerio, Sr, DB – A key cog in an outstanding in the Edgewood defensive backfield. Valerio was named OPSWA Division II Second Team All-Southwest District as a junior after recording 75 total tackles, two forced fumbles and seven fumble recoveries.
Braden Sullivan, Jr, RB/DB – Became quite the offensive weapon as a sophomore. Sullivan amassed 1,098 all-purpose yards, had 339 yards rushing, 21 receptions for 652 yards (31.0/rec) and found the end zone nine times (six rec, three rush) to earn OPSWA Division II Second Team All-Southwest District honors.
Tavionne Crosby, Sr, RB – One of the best kept secrets in Southwest Ohio. Crosby was a beast last fall running for 1,278 yards and 23 touchdowns. He was named OPSWA Division II Honorable Mention All-Southwest District for his efforts. Crosby has 2,070 yards and 31 touchdowns rushing in his career.
Evan Swartz, Sr, TE – An excellent blocker and a unsung threat as a receiver. Swartz caught nine balls for 146 yards on his way to Second Team All SWOC honors as a junior.
OTHER RETURNEES
David Rumpler, Jr, K/P – A special team’s commodity. Rumpler connected on 56/59 extra points and 3/4 field goals for 65 kicking points as a sophomore. He also averaged 36.1 yards on 29 punts.
Mason Green, Sr, LS – A true specialist at his craft of long snapping, Green is one of the Cougars most valuable players. He has verbally committed to Indiana State.
Layne Howell, Sr, WR/DB – Back for his third season as a starter in the secondary. Howell will also see his role on offense pick up as a senior. He has 61 total tackles, a fumble recovery and three interceptions in his career.
Luke Halsey, Jr, OT/DL – A returning starter, Halsey helped paved the way for an Edgewood offense that found the end zone 59 times (53 rush, six rec) in 2021.
Kohen Moore, Jr, OL/DL – Back for his second season as a starter, Moore opened holes for an offense that pounded out 352.9 yards of total offense per game a year ago.
Wyatt Walker, Jr, LB – It was a breakout sophomore campaign for Walker who has all-district talent. He finished the season 85 total tackles, one sack, one forced fumble and three fumble recoveries.
NEWCOMER
Declan Hitte, Jr, OL/DL – The transfer from Gahanna Lincoln brings added depth and experience in the trenches.
