2021 Snapshot: East Clinton
- Updated: June 27, 2021
This could and should be a “get over the hump” year for East Clinton. The Astros are looking to create new fortunes. With a squad that has played a ton of snaps at the varsity level, the program is primed for success.
“We return 11 seniors, 16 lettermen and will have our most experienced team in years. This group is having a great offseason. We have seen anywhere from 20-25 guys regularly at our workouts. They are hungry to have a great campaign. The goal is to have our first winning season in 10 years,” head coach Steven Olds states.
East Clinton has quality leadership. It will be one of their strengths. Like most smaller schools, the Astros lack for depth at certain positions. It is important that key members of the rotation stay healthy for this team to be prosperous.
The schedule is conducive to the Astros getting off to a great start. The first five teams on the slate, all had losing records in 2020. For the first time in a decade East Clinton is now expected to beat the teams/peers that they are supposed to on Friday nights. Accomplishing that will be the difference in them having a winning season and securing a playoff berth or sitting at home in Week 11.
Division V, Region 20
2020 RECORD: 4-6, 2-3 SBAAC National
COACH: Steven Olds (8-12 at East Clinton, two years; 8-12 overall)
HONOR ROLL
Jared, Smith, Sr, QB/DB/P – An excellent player in all three phases of the game. Smith is a two-time First Team SBAAC National selection. He heads into his senior season having amassed 3,123 yards of total offense (1,958 pass, 1,165 rush), while accounting for 38 touchdowns (26 pass, 12 rush), with six forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and an interception, in an Astros uniform.
Chris Norman, Sr, OL/DL – Will be one of the anchors on both sides of the line. Norman had two sacks and a forced fumble, as a junior. He was named Second Team All-SBAAC National.
Landon Runyon, Sr, WR/DB – The leader of the East Clinton secondary and a top target at receiver. Runyon had nine receptions for 194 yards, one touchdown catch, two forced fumbles, two interceptions and a pick six, as a junior. He was named Second Team All-SBAAC National for his efforts.
Glenn Peacock, So, RB – The future looks very bright for this youngster. Peacock ran for 438 yards and three touchdowns, as a freshman. He earned Honorable Mention All-SBAAC accolades for his work.
Freshmen of Influence: Class of 2024
NEWCOMERS
A pair of freshman, OL/DL Owen Roberts and RB/LB Aiden Conger should slide into the rotation and perhaps even find themselves in starting roles.
