2023 TSF Dayton DPOY Finalists

There are eight finalists for the 2023 TriState Football Dayton Defensive Player of the Year. Seven of them are seniors and one is a junior.

This the second nomination for Javon Hammonds Jr. He becomes the 10th player to have been nominated for this award twice in the 15-year history of the honor. Darrien Howard (Chaminade Julienne) is the only three-time finalist for the TSF Dayton DPOY, accomplishing the feat from 2010-12.

The members of the All-TSF Teams, the TSF Teams of the Year, Players of the Year and finalists from Indiana, Dayton, Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati as well as the Mella Windows Players of the Week will be recognized at the TriState Football Year In Review Awards Show on Monday, February 19th, 2024 at the Holy Grail-Banks – RSVP 2023 TSF Year In Review Show

Here is a look at our finalists for the 2023 TriState Football Dayton Defensive Player of the Year.

Javon Hammonds Jr., Wayne, Sr, DL – Was named OPSWA Division I First Team All-Ohio, First Team All-TSF and TSF Dayton DPOY finalist (for a second straight year). A tenacious defender, Hammonds Jr. led the GWOC with 25.0 tackles for losses as Wayne (7-4) finished with a winning record for a fourth straight season. Hammonds Jr. also racked up 83 total tackles, six-and-a-half sacks and two fumble recoveries. He has committed to Miami (OH).

Jackson Heims, Springfield, Jr, DE – Was named OPSWA Division I Second Team All-Ohio and Third Team All-TSF. The lone junior in this group and a three-year starter. Heims has played an integral part in Springfield’s three straight Division I state finals appearances. This past fall he registered 92 total tackles, nine-and-a-half sacks and 20.5 tackles for losses. Heims heads into his senior season with 262 total tackles, 19.5 sacks, three forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries. His offers include Ball State, Charlotte, Eastern Michigan, Miami (OH), Kentucky and Toledo.

Peyton Hoskins, Miamisburg, Sr, DE – Was named OPSWA Division I Honorable Mention All-Ohio and Honorable Mention All-TSF. A breakout senior campaign saw Hoskins lead the GWOC with 14.5 sacks helping Miamisburg (8-4) advance to the second round of the playoffs for the first time since 2016. Hoskins also had 51 total tackles, 20.5 tackles for losses, four forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. He has an offer from Defiance.

Nate Ostendorf, Badin, Sr, LB – Was named OPSWA Division III First Team All-Ohio, OPSWA Division III Southwest District DPOY and GCL Co-ed DPOY. Ostendorf anchored a Badin (13-1) defense that propelled the Rams to their fourth straight unbeaten regular season. He led the GCL Co-ed with 142 total tackles, had six sacks and 18.0 tackles for losses. Badin finished a combined 40-3 in Ostendorf’s three years as a starter. He has offers from Gannon, Case Western Reserve and Rose-Hulman.

Reggie Powers III, Centerville, Sr, DB – Was named OPSWA Division I First Team All-Ohio, OPSWA Division I Southwest District Co-DPOY and GWOC DPOY. A gifted athlete Powers III recorded 83 total tackles, one-and-a-half sacks, seven-and-a-half tackles for losses and two interceptions while playing a key role in Centerville winning the GWOC title for the first time since 2017. Powers III has signed with Oklahoma.

Bryce Reed, Valley View, Sr, LB – Was named OPSWA Division V First Team All-Ohio, SWBL Buckeye DPOY and Honorable Mention All-TSF. The centerpiece of a Valley View (13-2) defense that helped the Spartans win back-to-back Division V, Region 20 regional titles for the first time since 1996-97 and ninth regional title overall (all in the last 31 years). Reed led the SWBL in tackles with 132 (105 solo) to go along with three sacks, 22.5 tackles for losses, two forced fumbles, three passes defended and a 60-yard pick six versus Westfall in the playoffs. He finishes his career with 243 total tackles, six sacks, 37.0 tackles for losses, three forced fumbles, seven passes defended and three interceptions. Reed has offers from, Wittenberg, Capital, Defiance, Baker and Ottawa.

Aaron Scott Jr., Springfield, Sr, DB – Was named OPSWA Division I First Team All-Ohio and First Team All-TSF (for a second consecutive season). One of the premiere lock-down corners in the entire country, teams avoided Scott Jr.’s side of the field like the plague. He still managed to come up with two interceptions and 21 total tackles helping Springfield (10-6) win its fifth consecutive regional championship and third straight state runner-up finish. Scott Jr. played a bigger role on offense for the Wildcats as a senior throwing for 155 yards, running for 257 yards and accounting for 11 touchdowns (eight rush, three pass).  He has signed with Ohio State.

Devon Strobel, Troy, Sr, DL – Was named OPSWA Division II First Team All-Ohio, MVL DPOY and Honorable Mention All-TSF. A tenacious defender, Strobel was instrumental in Troy (11-2) getting to double digit wins (for the first time since 2018) and a Division II, Region 8 semifinals appearance. Strobel was in on 48 total tackles, led the MVL with nine-and-a-half sacks and was second in the league with 18.0 tackles for losses. On offense, Strobel had four touchdown runs on 21 carries. He has offers from Thomas More, John Carroll and Capital.
