Cincinnati Round-Up: Middletown stymies Lakota East

With just four weeks left in the regular season, teams are battling for playoff positioning and conference races are really starting to shape up across the Cincinnati high school football landscape.

NO. 16 MIDDLETOWN 27, NO. 14 LAKOTA EAST 6
Middletown continued its strong season with a statement win, knocking off Lakota East to improve to 6-1 and remain firmly in the GMC title hunt. The Middies’ defense set the tone, forcing four turnovers, recording four sacks, and holding the Thunderhawks to just 1-of-9 on third-down conversions.

J.D. Singletary anchored the effort up front with six tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, and a forced fumble he also recovered. His disruptive presence helped Middletown control the line of scrimmage all night.

On offense, senior playmaker Jordan Vann turned in a big-play performance, needing only three carries to rack up 107 yards and two touchdowns. His 82-yard sprint to the end zone capped a decisive third-quarter surge. Just two minutes earlier, teammate Demetrian James broke loose for a 64-yard touchdown run, breaking the game open for good.

Despite the loss, Lakota East’s Ryder Hooks shined, piling up a game-high 163 rushing yards. But his effort wasn’t enough to overcome the relentless Middletown defense and the explosive plays from the Middies’ backfield.

With the victory, Middletown keeps its momentum rolling into October, positioning itself as a serious contender down the stretch in the GMC race.

NO. 6 ST. XAVIER 17, LOUISVILLE TRINITY 14
In a battle of two of the most storied programs in their respective states, St. Xavier took care of business at home edging Trinity, 17-14.

The Bombers got out of the gate quickly as Alex Walker scored on a blocked punt recovery less than two minutes into the contest. Jackson Frey and Daniel Volmer connected on a 19-yard pass later in the quarter as the Bombers raced out to a two-scrore lead.

From there it would be their defense that would take care of business, yielding just two scoring drives in the entire game. They held the Shamrocks to just two yards per carry and forced a pair of key turnovers.

NO. 18 FAIRFIELD 14, NO. 17 MASON 13 OT

The two times each just mustered one score in regulation, but things turned exciting quickly in overtime as Fairfield came up with a huge stop on a two-point conversion to hold off Mason, 14-13.

Senior Jake Schwartz locked up quarterback Alex Nagel and a couple other Indian defenders finished him off to seal the deal.

Corrious Booker and Mason Wheeler each ran for touchdowns in the winning effort for Fairfield.

Fairfield moves to 4-3, 4-2 GMC, Mason falls to 3-4, 3-3 in conference play.
