Things got back on track at Piqua last fall after a pair of losing campaigns. The Indians finished above .500 and made the playoffs for the first since 2022. It was a good season but with eight starters back on defense and five returning on offense this team is looking to become a great one in 2025.
Piqua beat the teams they were supposed to a year ago. Where the Indians fell short was against the upper tier teams on the schedule. They went 1-5 versus teams with a winning record with a 18.3 average margin of defeat in those affairs. Being competitive and coming out victorious over top competition will take Piqua to the next level.
The Indians return their entire defensive line and secondary and two of their linebackers. Seven players who were first year starters on a unit that gave up more that 2,000 yards rushing and passing in 2024 are ready to prove that they are far better than what the stats felected a year ago. Keep an eye on Landon Sullenberger and Luke Jensvold who acquitted themselves very well as freshmen. Sullenberger (3), Jay Hancock (5), Hunter Grissom (3) and Myles Haney (4) combined for 15 takeaways last season.
Head coach Bill Nees and staff have the tall task of rebuilding the offensive line. The good news for Nees is that replenishing size up front usually isn’t a problem at Piqua. Back for his second season as a starter expect quarterback Chris Davis to have a monster junior campaign and be a candidate for the MVL Offensive Player of the Year. Much of his success will be dependent on the o-line and a stable of unproven running backs stepping up.
Division II, Region 8 is loaded with talented teams including Anderson, winner of the last three regional titles. Securing a first round playoff bye and second round home game won’t be easy but Piqua is more than capable of putting itself in that situation. For that to happen every Indian will have to give an elevated effort every Friday night.
