2019 Video Snapshot: Madeira

Before the 2018 season started Madeira was even thought of as a postseason contender. New head coach Chris Stewart got the Mustangs to believe in themselves and when the smoke cleared on the regular season the program found itself in the playoffs for the first time since ’14 and 10th time in school history.

Madeira fell 31-28 in overtime to Greenview in the first round of the Region 20 playoffs but excitement about what the future might hold was just beginning. A new era and vibe had now entrenched itself.

This season the Mustangs are loaded at the skill positions and in the secondary. Up front they lose some valuable size and experience. The confidence gained from last year’s run has carried over and Madeira will be a tough out on Friday night. No one will overlook the mustangs this fall.

Division V, Region 20
2018 RECORD: 7-4, 5-2 CHL
COACH: Chris Stewart (7-4 at Madeira, one year; 7-4 overall, one year)

HONOR ROLL
Lee Megois, Sr, WR/DB – An outstanding junior campaign saw Megois reel in 41 receptions for 721 yards with seven receiving touchdowns, 1,172 all-purpose, 44 total tackles, a fumble recovery and eight interceptions. That effort earned Megois Division V Honorable Mention All-Southwest District honors.

Vince Englert, Sr, TE/DL – Led Madeira with 49 receptions for 548 yards in ‘18. Englert also had 29 total tackles and five sacks on defense. He was named Second Team All-CHL for his work.

Nick Groene, Sr, DB – Was a real force for the Mustangs secondary with 30 total tackles, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery, five interceptions, 189 interception return yards and two pick sixes as a junior. Groene was named Second Team All-CHL for that performance. Groene has seven career interceptions, 268 interception return yards and three interception return touchdowns in his career.

Max Spelder, Jr, OL/DL – Looks to take the next step up as a starter after seeing action on the both sides of the line as sophomore. He was named Honorable Mention All-CHL for his work a year ago.

Ryan Hamm, Sr, WR/DB – Was an Honorable Mention All-CHL selection as a junior after providing Madeira with productivity on both sides of the ball. On offense, Hamm ran for 182 yards, caught 22 balls for 372 yards and found the end zone six times (three rush, three rec). Defensively, Hamm tallied 40 total tackles, forced a fumble and had four interceptions.

Johnathan Thiele, Sr, RB/LB – Really turned it on starting in Week 5 last fall. Thiele ran for 672 of his 840 yards, had all four of his 100 yard-plus rushing games and scored 13 of his 14 touchdowns in the Mustangs final seven tilts. He was named Honorable Mention All-CHL for his efforts. Thiele heads into his final season with 1,291 yard and 16 touchdowns rushing at the varsity level.

OTHER RETURNEES
Andrew Pruitt
, Sr, OL – A returning starter at left guard, Pruitt helped that pave the way for the Mustangs to rush for over 1,500 yards last season.

Nolan Herron, Jr, OLB – Had a solid varsity debut in ‘18. Herron recorded 50 total tackles, had two sacks, forced a fumble, and recovered three fumbles including a 33-yard scoop-and-score against Woodward.

Aiden Reid, Sr, OL – Enters his second season as the starter at right guard. Reid looks to become leader on the offensive line.

NEWCOMERS
Cannon Shafer
, Jr, WR/DB – Should have an even larger role as a receiver after appearing in seven games with three receptions for 23 yards a year ago.

Sam Autry, Jr, QB – Looks to take over the quarterbacking duties. Autry caught three balls for 44 yards and a touchdown as a sophomore.

Kyrie McCray-Brown, Sr, DL – With the loss of three seniors on both sides of the line McCray-Brown will have the opportunity to gain a starting position.

Alex Krikorian, Jr – OLB- Looks to step into a full-time starting role after making a couple of starts during the middle of last season.

Casey Bell, Jr – WR/DB- pushed for playing time last year at both receiver and in the secondary. With a good off-season, Bell should see a lot of playing time this fall.

Lucas Cedillo, Sr, DB/WR – Played some defensive back when the Mustangs went to their nickel package in ‘18. Cedillo looks to compete for a starting job this upcoming season.

Elijah DePiore, Jr, DL – Has made significant strides in the weight room this off-season. DePioreis eager to show that he can put himself into the mix for some playing time.
