East Central keeps streak going

The last time the Lawrenceburg Tigers beat the East Central Trojans was 1992. No player on either sideline was even born yet. The Trojans entered this contest at No. 14 in the Preseason Blitz 5 Top 25 and didn’t plan on the streak coming to an end this year.

It was a beautiful Friday night at Neary Field at Dick Meador Stadium for the first stop on the 2019 Blitz 5 Tour presented by TriStateFootball.com.

Emotions flew high before the game when Lawrenceburg paid tribute to East Central linebacker Brett Fox, who died in a car accident back in February. East Central players and coaches were wearing t-shirts with angel wings and #8 in honor of Fox.

It was also the first game as a varsity head coach for new Trojans’ frontman Jake Meiners. The former East Central quarterback and assistant took over this offseason for Don Stonefield.

Once the game started, it was all business for both sides. Lawrenceburg drove the length of the field on the opening drive, taking over 10 minutes off the clock. However, the Tigers would come up with no points after turning it over on downs.

The Tigers got on the scoreboard first when Garret Yoon hit Seth Lampert on 10-yard TD pass with 10:06 in the second quarter, but the extra point was no good and Lawrenceburg led 6-0.

Jake Fike helped East Central answer when he took a 53-yard run to the house and with a successful PAT the Trojans took a 7-6 lead.

Yoon and the Tigers would strike back quickly with a 60-yard touchdown pass to Dakota Roth. This time they went for two, but once again Lawrenceburg would come up empty on the conversion. Yoon threw for 201 yards and two touchdowns on the night.

The lead wouldn’t last long though, just 19 seconds later Ryan Bond hit Trevor Becker for a 59-yard TD pass and East Central lead at the half 14-12.

The Trojans would own the second half and their defense would play a big factor, forcing three turnovers, including fumbles on each of the Tigers’ first two possessions. East Central capitalized on those mistakes and put the game away and outscored Lawrenceburg 16-0 in the second half on their way to a 18-point victory.

Fike finished with 175 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries in the win. East Central finished with 315 total yards of offense on just 36 plays. The Trojans had just 11 first downs to the Tigers’ 18, including no first downs in the first half.
