2021 Snapshot: Summit Country Day
- Updated: May 15, 2021
Direction from the top is what Summit Country Day lacked last fall. There was too much talent for the team to finish under .500. Expect all of that to change under new head coach, Dave Wirth. The Silver Knights will be more polished in 2021.
This is a team that has speed and quickness at the skills positions. They will play to that strength. Summit Country Days has all the ingredients to play an exciting brand of football on offense.
The Silver Knights needs gave away far too many possessions a year ago. They need to take better care of the ball, in order to be more successful. Keeping an undersized defense (up front) off the field as long as possible is a must.
Bank on Wirth getting the most out of his squad. Don’t expect SCD to underachieve behind his guidance. Look for the Silver Knights to be back in the playoffs for the ninth time in the last 12 years.
Division V, Region 20
2020 RECORD: 4-6, 1-3 MVC Scarlet
HEAD COACH: Dave Wirth (0-0 at Summit Country Day, first year, 85-73 overall; 14 years)
HONOR ROLL
Carter Bibler, Sr, TE/DE – One of the premier players in the MVC. Bibler tallied 64 total tackles, had nine-and-a-half sacks, forced two, fumbles, recovered two fumbles and snared an interception as a junior. He was named OPSWA Division V Honorable Mention All-Ohio.
Brady Griffiths, Sr, OT/DE – A real beast on defense and like Bibler, Griffiths is one the conference’s best players. He was in on 52 total tackles, had 19.0 sacks, 23 tackles for losses, three forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries in 20020. Griffiths was named OPSWA Division V Second Team All-Southwest District for his efforts.
Ryan Overbeck, Sr OT/DT – Part of a rock-solid defensive front for the Silver Knights, Overbeck was a Second Team All-MVC Scarlet selection a year ago. He had four sacks and an interception.
Alex Davis, Jr, QB – A threat with his arm and legs, Davis really flourished the back half of his sophomore season. He finished the year with more than 1,000 yards passing and 500-plus yards rushing on his way to Honorable Mention All-MVC Scarlet accolades.
Luca Tosolini, Sr, TE/LB – Back for a third year as a starter, Tosolini can be a disruptive force. He was an Honorable Mention All-MVC Scarlet selection as a junior.
OTHER RETURNEES
Jack Hargis, Sr, OG/LB – A high motor guy, Hargis will be a major cog on both sides of the ball this fall.
Nicky Luttmer, Sr, FB/LB – Look for Luttmer to have a big senior campaign. He could be a real closer in the red zone for the Summit offense.
Jacob Carrico, Jr, WR/DB – Will be a top option in the passing game. Carrico will also start in the secondary.
Josh Witzeman, Sr, WR/DB – Will be leader in the secondary for the Silver Knights. Witzeman has all-conference talent.
Donovan Matthews, So, WR/FS – Found a niche as a possession receiver, as a freshman. Matthews is a player who can keep the chains moving.
Eric Deal, Jr, RB/S – Became a dual threat out of the backfield as a sophomore. It is not out of the realm of possibilities that Deal could have more than 500 yards rushing and receiving this season.
NEWCOMERS
Sophomores WR/S Lorenzo Rose and RB/LB Chris Reuter are expected to make immediate impacts starting in Week 1. Rose had an interception in limited playing time as a freshman.
