Cincinnati Round-Up: Week 1

It was the opening Friday night of the season and the action didn’t disappoint across the city. Here’s a look at some of Cincinnati’s top action.

NO. 3 LA SALLE 20, NO. 6 COLERAIN 14
The La Salle Lancers lived up to their No. 3 ranking in the Blitz 5 Top 25 Friday night, knocking off perennial powerhouse Colerain Cardinals 20-14 at Lancer Stadium.

The scoring was slow-going in the first half before La Salle took a 7-0 lead with under a minute left in the first quarter on a Gi’Bran Payne one-yard scamper into the house. Payne added another short scamper just before the half to lead the Lancers to a 14-0 halftime lead.

Colerain got on the board in the second half when Tayshawn Banks returned the opening kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown.

A pair of La Salle field goals by Mason Luensman put the Lancers up for good with a 20-7 lead. The Cardinals would tack on a late touchdown but could not overcome the Lancer lead, dropping their opening game for the second year in a row.

NO. 7 WINTON WOODS 18, TROTWOOD-MADISON 0
Defense was the story at Winton Woods as the Warriors tallied two safeties in addition to two touchdowns to knock off Trotwood Madison 18-0 to start the season 1-0.

The Warriors got off to a hot start in the first half with an early touchdown and safety, culminating in a 45-yard touchdown pass that put Winton Woods and first-year head coach Chad Murphy in a 16-0 advantage headed into the half.

A bad snap by the Rams two minutes into the third quarter led to the Warriors defense taking it back to the house, extending the lead to 18-0, which the team held until the final horn.

Winton Woods will travel to take on the La Salle Lancers next week, while Trotwood Madison will take on Fairmont. Trotwood Madison suffered its first shutout regular-season loss since 2008.
