Cincinnati Round-Up: Colerain gets first win

It was another exciting week in the Tri-State for high school football, including a few close games involving our Blitz5 Top 25 teams. Here is a round-up of some of the area’s top games on Friday night.

NO. 8 COLERAIN 21, NO. 10 MASON 16
After back-to-back losses to start the season, the Colerain Cardinals rebounded on Friday night against Mason, beating the Comets in a close 21-16 battle at Dwire Field.

Colerain senior running back MJ Flowers got the scoring started on a touchdown run to put the Cardinals up 7-0 early in the first quarter.

Mason responded on a 50-yard touchdown run by Nick Sailers to tie the game 7-7 in the first quarter.

After the teams exchanged touchdown scores, it was another 50-yard scoring run by MJ Flowers late in the fourth quarter that ended up being the difference in the game with Colerain nabbing its first win of the season.

Flowers finished the game with 164 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries. Sailers led the Comets with 135 yards on the ground with a touchdown on 17 carries. Colerain outgained Mason on the offensive side of the ball 327-231.

Colerain will hope to make it two in a row when they return home to take on Sycamore, while Mason will travel to Barnitz Stadium to take on Middletown.

NO. 17 SYCAMORE 42, NO. 13 FAIRFIELD 18
In a Greater Miami Conference battle of two teams featured in the Blitz5 Top 25, No. 17 Sycamore found an offensive groove and routed the higher-ranked No. 13 Fairfield Indians 42-18.

The Aviators found the end zone early and often, starting a quarterback keeper from William Ingle followed closely by a Ingle to Cairo Ford connection through the air to put Sycamore up 14-0 early.

Fairfield responded with a 65-yard touchdown pass from Talon Fisher to Braeden Shanklin but a missed extra point stunted the Indians score at six.

Sycamore extended its lead to 28-12 just before the half on another Ingle touchdown. Momentum led the Aviators into the second half where they scored another two touchdowns to take the win.

Sycamore will travel to take on Colerain next week while will return home to take on Fairfield.

NO. 7 WINTON WOODS 13, NO. 14 KINGS 14
Defense was the storyline in the matchup between Eastern Cincinnati Conference foes Winton Woods Warriors and Kings Knights on Friday night, but it was the Knights upsetting the Warriors 14-13.

True to the theme of the night, the first score came in the second quarter when Kings quarterback Will Kocher was leveled on a sack, fumbling into the end zone with Winton Woods’ Terren Macklin recovering to put the Warriors up 7-0.

Knights running back Max Sannella got Kings on the board with a three-yard scamper to send the teams into the half tied 7-7.

James Minor III put the Warriors back in front in the third quarter, but a crucial missed field would end up deciding the game after Will Kocher found Michael Mussari for a score, allowing the Knights to take the game-ending lead 14-13 after a successful extra point.

Kings (3-0)  will return home next week to continue ECC play against Anderson, while Winton Woods (1-2) will look to rebound after two straight losses, traveling to Lebanon to take on the other ECC Warriors.
