NKY Round-Up: Cooper handles rival Conner for a fourth straight time

It’s mid-season for Northern Kentucky High School football, and week 6 featured multiple great matchups, which saw top-25 squads Cooper and Covington Catholic grabbing big wins.

#22 COOPER 49, CONNER 14

Senior quarterback Cam O’Hara and the Cooper Jaguars got back to .500 on their season with a big win over the visiting Conner Cougars, 49-14 on Friday night. It was the fourth straight win for Cooper over its Boone County rival. The Jaguars have and average margin of victory during their current streak in the series.

After the Jaguars offense had struggled at times throughout the season, their performance on Friday against regional foe Cooper put any worries about the rest of their season to bed. O’Hara and the Cooper offense was in full control from the outset of the game, as they continued to find their stride at the right time.

The Jags big win over Cooper was just a continuation of their recent offensive success, as they have outscored their opponents 104 to 34 in their three wins this season, all of which have come in the last four contests.

Cooper’s performance on Friday was also exactly what they needed following a tough loss to in-state competitor DuPont Manual last weekend. Defensively, the Jaguars gave a huge bounce-back performance, holding Conner to small gains offensively while dominating in time  of possession.

O’Hara and the Jaguars will look to add another win to their resume next week when they travel to play Dixie Heights. Conner will attempt to get back on track when they host Boone County.

#12 COVINGTON CATHOLIC 35, CENTRAL 6

After a tough 0-2 start to their season, the Covington Catholic Colonels have rattled off four straight wins – all in convincing fashion – including a big 35-6 win over the Central Yellowjackets on Friday evening.

It was the Cash Harney and Dylan Gaiser show throughout the game, as Covington Catholic’s potent senior duo were able to take full control of the contest from the outset. Gaiser tallied four different touchdowns, three on the ground and one receiving, continuing his impressive season.

Meanwhile, Harney connected for two touchdown throws, including the one to Gaiser and the other to senior Owen Pitzer at the very end of the third quarter.

The Colonels defense was also up to the challenge on Friday as well, highlighted by a goal line interception when senior defensive back Zach Brooks caught up to a Central pass and reeled it in with just one hand.

Despite the late score by the Yellowjackets, the Colonels defense held strong once again, holding their opponents to under 20 points for the fourth straight week.

Covington Catholic will look to continue their win streak next weekend on the road against Highlands, while Louisville-based Central will host Christian Academy Louisville.

DIXIE HEIGHTS 62, SCOTT 19

For the second straight week, Dixie Heights turned in a dominating performance, as they rolled past the Scott Eagles with ease, winning 62-19 on Friday night to move to 2-4 on their 2025 season.

Both squads came out of the gate firing on all cylinders, combining for 50+ points in the first quarter alone, but it was the Colonels who were able to gain the upper hand, using two interceptions by senior Nishawn Golsby, including one that Golsby took to the house for a pick-six.

The Colonels defense didn’t stop there, however, as senior Hudson Morris turned an interception into a pick six of his own, pushing the Colonels out to a lead that they would not relinquish for the rest of the game.

Offensively, the Colonels were led by junior Parks Vonderhaar and Morris, who each had two scores in the first quarter alone. It was a banner night for Morris and Golsby, who scored on both sides of the ball for a total of three separate times individually.

Next week, the Colonels will host rival Cooper, while Scott will look to rebound on the road at Clay County,
