LEBANON, Oh. – Fans in Lebanon got their money’s worth Friday night, as Eastern Cincinnati Conference rivals Turpin and Lebanon went blow for blow before Lebanon prevailed in a two-overtime 41-38 barnburner.
Early on, however, it looked as if Turpin would have their way in the game, as the Spartans jumped out to a 17-0 lead in part due to a 1-yard TD run by Luke Mileham and a 24-yard field goal from Addi Braun.
The Warriors finally found the endzone in the second quarter, beginning with a 50-yard touchdown strike from QB Luke Faler to Wyatt Lassen. Lebanon would tack on another Faler touchdown pass – this one a 30-yarder to Lassen – to draw within 17-14 at the half.
Listen to Lebanon head coach Micah Faler on High School Football Tonight on ESPN 1530:
Lebanon would take their first lead of the game in the third quarter, as Faler would toss his third touchdown of the game, to Nick Lautar, to make it 21-17 Warriors. But Turpin would respond in kind, as quarterback Luke Mileham hit wideout CJ Elliott for a 25-yard touchdown to put the Spartans back on top.
It wouldn’t last long, as a 38-yard field goal by Lebanon’s Logan Lane would knot the score at 24-24 to end the third quarter, and seesaw battle continued into the fourth quarter. The Warriors would again find the end zone, as Faler tossed yet another touchdown to Lauter, to go ahead 31-24. The Spartans would match that once again, this time with Mileham tossing a 9-yard TD to Callan Poland to tie the game once again.
Then it was Lebanon’s Faler again, with his fifth touchdown pass of the game – this one to Lassen, his third TD catch of the game – to take a 38-31 lead late in the fourth quarter.
Faler would finish the game 36 of 59 for 503 yards and five touchdowns, with three different receivers – Lautar, Lassen and Daniel Wallace – all going for more than 100 yards receiving on the night. He set a new school record with 505 passing yards tonight, breaking Dakota Allen’s 2015 mark of 451 yards. He also tied Allen’s record for most passing touchdowns in a game (5).
With roughly 4 minutes left on the clock, though, Turpin had once last chance in regulation and they made it count, driving down the field and capping the drive on a Mileham 2-yard touchdown run to tie it at the end of regulation.
Neither squad was able to do anything in the first overtime, and in the second overtime, that’s when the leg of Lebanon’s Logan Lane came into play. Given the chance for a game-winning field goal, Lane put it right through the uprights from 22 yards out to give the Warriors a thrilling 41-38 victory.
