NKY Round-Up: Dixie Heights notches program’s 500th win

Week 9 saw a slew of routs among Northern Kentucky squads, with a few defensive battles
sprinkled in.

DIXIE HEIGHTS 55, BOONE COUNTY 0
It was a historic night for the Dixie Heights Colonels on Friday, as their 55-0 rout of rival Boone County marked the 500th win in the program’s history.

Additionally, the Colonels will host a home playoff game, giving them a huge advantage to start their 2025 KHSAA playoff run.

With a running clock kicked in, it was all but certain that the Colonels would be heading into the final weeks of their regular season with all the momentum they could ask for.

The Colonels came out of the gate hot, putting up a whopping 22 points in the first quarter on the Rebels defense. They promptly followed that up with 20 more in the second quarter, setting the halftime score at 42-0.

Once the backups came in for Dixie Heights, they did not slow down offensively, scoring in both the third and fourth quarters to pitch in essence a perfect game offensively, and a shutout defensively.

Next up for Dixie Heights (4-5, 3-1) will be a tough road test at Ryle (5-3, 2-0) in two weeks, while Boone County (4-4, 1-2) will look to rebound against at Cooper next Friday night.

SIMON KENTON 38, CAMPBELL COUNTY 21
With a big win over the Campbell County Camels 38-21 on Friday night, the Simon Kenton Pioneers clinched at least the no. 2 seed in the Class 6A, sixth district for the KHSAA state playoffs.

In a tight battle all evening, it was the Pioneers who came up big in crunch time, finding the endzone twice after being only up by 3 points against their tough opponent in the Camels.

Sophomore quarterback Grant Webb was slinging the ball all over the field in the passing game, including a touchdown throw to fellow sophomore wideout Forest Hughes, and an impressive 61-yard scramble late to set up the Pioneers to score the game-sealing touchdown.

Additionally, senior halfback Landon Young was dominant all night for the Pioneers, as the senior team leader was able to rack up two different rushing touchdowns; one from 29-yards out and one at the goal line.

For the Camels, sophomore quarterback Xander Guy continued his breakout season with another gritty performance under center for Campbell County.

The young signal caller threw two touchdowns and looked in complete control of an offense that had struggled in recent times, following five-straight losses for Campbell County, Friday night brought a sense of hope that they will be a dark horse in the state playoffs this year.

Next week, Simon Kenton (5-3, 2-0) will travel to Ryle (5-3, 2-0), while Campbell County (2-6, 0-2) will host Great Crossing (1-7,  0-2).

NEWPORT 6, BELLEVUE 0
In a close, defensive contest between these two rivals, it was the Newport Wildcats who came out on top, 6-0 to move closer to clinching the second overall seed in their region for the state playoffs.

The final score tells the whole story of this contest, as both Newport and Bellevue’s offense were impressive throughout the night, giving this rivalry game the gritty, tough reputation it deserves.

Newport’s defense was able to keep the Tigers behind the sticks all night, forcing Bellevue into many fourth-and-long situations.

Meanwhile, Bellevue’s defense did a good job of holding the Wildcats offense to similar situations, often stuffing the Newport rushing attack in short yardage situations.

The difference in the contest came down to Newport’s senior wideout Carvonta Roper hauling in a short pass and racing down the sidelines for a 50-yard touchdown.

The game’s only score came in the first quarter, and from there, it was a battle of defensive fortitudes between these two heated foes.

Next up, Newport (4-4, 1-1) will travel to play the Dayton Greendevils (2-6,  0-2), while Bellevue (5-3, 1-1) will host Newport
Central Catholic (4-4, 2-0).
