2021 Snapshot: Roger Bacon

Life after Corey Kiner begins at Roger Bacon. The good news is that the program is in as good of shape as it has been in decades. Now other players get to step into the spotlight and shine. Don’t expect a squad that returns seven second team and two honorable mention all-league performers to fall off the map. This is an experienced group that understands, hard work brings about great results.

Roger Bacon is coming off its first ever regional championship. The Spartans seniors have been a part of 20 wins, the most ever over a two-year period for the school. They are ready to write their own pages into this chapter of football in St. Bernard.

The great unknowns are on the offensive and defensive lines. The faster they come together, the greater the results are going to be. Roger Bacon is loaded with speed at the skills positions on offense. The Spartans set records both running and throwing the ball in 2020.

Roger Bacon came out of the gate smoking hot a year ago, averaging 51.4 points over the first five games. Putting points on the board with these cheetahs should not be a problem this fall.

The defense will be led by a secondary that returns four lettermen. Roger Bacon allowed just 14.1 points per contest last season, held four opponents to seven points or less including two shutouts and no one scored more than 28 points on them (only four foes topped the 20-point mark). Another performance like that and success will be imminent for the Spartans.

Division V, Region 20
2020 RECORD: 10-1, 6-0 MVC Scarlet
HEAD COACH: Mike Blaut (34-29 at Roger Bacon, six years, 34-29 overall)

HONOR ROLL
Kyle Guyer
, Sr, WR/DB – A team captain and leader on both sides of the ball, Guyer had 13 receptions for 272 yards and five touchdowns last season. Defensively, he was third on the team in tackles with a fumble recovery and an interception. Guyer was named Second Team All-MVC Scarlet for his work.

George Janzen, Sr, OL/LB – A team captain who leads by example. Janzen had a sack and was named Second Team All-MVC Scarlet as a junior.

Logan Huber, Sr, QB – Recorded the most accurate season by a Spartans quarterback in school history, in his first year as a starter. Huber, a team captain threw for 1,132 yards, completed 63.6% of his passes while throwing for 14 touchdowns and just one interception in 2020. He earned Second Team All-MVC Scarlet honors for his effort.

Dylan Rolfert, Sr, OL/DL/K – Already a factor in the kicking game, Rolfert looks to do the same in the trenches. He was named Second Team All-MVC Scarlet after connecting on 52/63 extra points and 3/5 field goal attempts (with a long of 37-yards) for 61 points in 2020.

Timyone Andrew, Jr, RB/WR/DB, RS – Might be the best athlete on the team. Andrew will be a factor in all three phases of the game. He was named Second Team All-MVC Scarlet (DB) as a sophomore.

Kent Guyer, Jr, WR/DB – Another key component to a junior class that has a ton of promise. Guyer was a Second Team All-MVC Scarlet (DB) selection as a sophomore.

Beamer Walker, Jr, WR/DB – The best is still ahead for this defensive back. Walker had a 47-yard pick six against Norwood on his way to Second Team All-MVC Scarlet honors a year ago.

Jah’Mal Hutsell, Sr, RB/WR/DB – Has legitimate 4.4 speed with the ability to score from anywhere on the field. Hutsell was an Honorable Mention All-MVC Scarlet selection as a junior and Second Team All-MVC Scarlet member as a sophomore. He has 1,273 all-purpose yards (751 rush, 320 rec, 202 ret), 24 receptions and 12 touchdowns (nine rush, three rec) in his career.

Jake Tschida, Sr, WR/DB – Blessed with incredible ball skills and speed. Tschida had 17 receptions for 250 yards and two touchdowns on his way to Honorable Mention All-MVC Scarlet accolades a year ago.

NEWCOMERS
Head coach Mike Blaut is hoping juniors OL/DL Zach Meister, OL/DL Dakari Edwards, OL/DL Allon Hill, OL/DL Bryson Andres and QB/WR/DB Jimmy Mumper acclimate themselves to Friday night lights sooner rather than later. Meister (5-11/285), Edwards (6-3/260) and Andres (6-1/230) bring girth up front. Junior transfer TE Zavier Hoover makes an offense loaded with weapons even deeper.
