All-TSF: Quarterback Primer

There is no doubt that 2015 was the year of the quarterback across all borders at TriStateFootball.com. A rich and deeply talented group under center saw big arms and strong legs produce some very impressive numbers this past fall.

Of the 37 players nominated for the 2015 Postseason All-TSF team 29 were seniors. Their leadership proved to be invaluable and highly measurable in setting the bar at their programs for years to come.

Here is a look at the quarterback nominee’s for the 2015 Postseason All-TSF team:

PLAYERS OF THE YEAR: it was an amazing year by Montgomery, who was named the AP Division III Ohio Offensive Player of the Year in 2015. Aichholz earned the AP Ohio Division IV Southwest District Offensive Player of the Year award and Noyen brought home the same honors in Division V.

STATE TITLE GAME STARTERS: Our list of nominees includes three that have started on teams that have won state championship games – Watson (twice in ’15 & ’14) while Fentress (’14) and Plitt (’14) accomplished the feat as sophomores. DeWeaver started three state title games during his career (two at Trotwood-Madison in ’12 & ‘13 and one at Wayne in ‘15) but never won one during his career. Fieger and Patton were also starters on teams that fell just short in the finale this past season.

2,000-YARD PASSING CLUB: More than half of our nominees (19) threw for more than 2,000 yards led by Carroll (3,353) followed by Bolin (3,002), E. Cunningham (2,990), DeWeaver (2,924), Allen (2,844), Fieger (2,763), Ramsey (2,689), Morgan (2,674), Pilcher (2,660), Wilson (2,635), Aichholz (2,568), Knecht (2,441), Tomlin (2,437), Naylor (2,414), Harrison (2,379), S. Cunningham (2,373), Craine (2,168), Stoll (2,095) and Brown (2,048).

TOSSING TOUCHDOWNS: There were many quarterbacks that got it done through the air with 17 of our nominees throwing at least 21 touchdown passes – Fieger (40), Wilson (37), E. Cunningham (33), DeWeaver (32), Tomlin (32), Allen (30), Naylor (28), Harrison (27), Ramsey (26), Brown (23), Carroll (23), Griffin (23), Padgett (23), Pilcher (22), MacVittie (22), Morgan (21) and Craine (21).

1,000-YARD RUNNERS: Seven of our 37 quarterbacks ran for more than 1,000 yards – Montgomery (2,707), Jones (1,860), Patton (1,755), Noyen (1,440), Ramsey (1,232), Aichholz (1,105) and Griffin (1,087).

RUNNING TO PAYDIRT: Some quarterbacks had a nose for the end zone as five signal-callers ran for more than 20 touchdowns – Montgomery (41), Patton (33), Aichholz (31), Jones (29), Noyen (20). Montgomery had a streak of nine games with at least three rushing touchdowns.

THE 1,000/1,000 CLUB: Five players on our list ran and threw for more than 1,000 yards in ’15 – Aicholz (2,568 Pa, 1,105 Ru), Griffin (1,671 Pa, 1,087 Ru), Noyen (1,771 Pa, 1,440 Ru), Patton (1,454 Pa, 1,755 Ru) and Ramsey (2,689 Pa, 1,232 Ru).

COLLEGE BOUND: Several seniors are moving on to play at the next level – DeWeaver – Michigan State; E. Cunningham – BGSU; Harrison – Navy; Krause – Davenport; MacVittie – Pittsburgh; Plitt – Ball State and Ramsey – Indiana. Montgomery is still weighing his options. Clifford, a junior, has already declared that Penn State is the place for him. In Kentucky junior Morgan has offers from Cincinnati and Wake Forest under his belt.

SEE YOU NEXT YEAR: There are eight juniors – Aichholz, Allen, Clifford, Hutchinson, Knecht, Morgan, Racke and Wilson who will be back next fall to see if they can take their game to an even higher level. There are no sophomores (Class of 2018) on our list of nominees.
