5 Best Bets: Week 0

The football season kicks off in Kentucky and Indiana this weekend with the infamous Week 0 matchups. We take a look at some of the top games from around the Tri-state area in this week’s 5 Best Bets.

#22 RYLE at #8 COVINGTON CATHOLIC
The Colonels saw their state-best 29-game winning streak snapped the last time they stepped foot on the field as they fell to South Warren in last year’s Class 5A final. Eddie Eviston and his boys will be looking to start a new streak against the visiting Raiders, who look much improved after last year’s 2-9 finish. This marks the fifth year in a row that these two teams will meet to start the season. The series has been split in that span, but CovCath has won the last two meetings by a combined 89-24 margin.

#11 SIMON KENTON vs. HENRY CLAY
Jeff Marksberry’s crew hits the road to face Henry Clay to start the year after a deep playoff run in 6A a year ago. Simon Kenton took care of the Blue Devils went they met in Round 2 of the postseason last November 25-7. Look Austin Hammack to shoulder the load behind another solid offensive front this season for the Pioneers.

NEWPORT CENTRAL CATHOLIC AT CAMPBELL COUNTY
Stephen Lickert returns to Campbell County for the first time since he left his post as head coach at the school two years ago and the emotions will be running high in Alexandria. Led by All-TSF Honorable Mention Paul Kremer at quarterback, NCC is more than capable of putting points on the scoreboard. NewCath has seen a steady drop in enrollment and this year they’re dropping to Class A. The Breds’ depth may not be enough to keep up with the Camels, who are returning a solid nucleus.

HIGHLANDS AT SCOTT
Heading into the 2019 season, no active player has run for more yards in Northern Kentucky than Scott running back Quincy Perrin. A starter since his freshman year, Perrin is one of the most explosive players south of the Ohio River with 42 varsity touchdowns. Highlands will have a tall order containing him, but have the manpower to do so. The Bluebirds’ defense is anchored by senior linebacker Brycen Huddleston, who was named first all-NKY and was a finalist for the TriState Football Northern Kentucky Defensive Player of the Year last season.

DIXIE HEIGHTS AT COOPER
The Colonels only mustered a single win a year ago, but there is reason for optimism in the season ahead. All-TSF signal caller Jeremy Adams was underrated as a junior and has some capable playmakers around him. The defense will need to play better after giving up 34 or more points a year ago six times in 11 games. Cooper won the meeting last season 20-16 and will be the favorites once again playing at home here. The Jaguars’ offense returns three starters on the line and playmakers at quarterback, running back and receiver. The defense returns three of the Jaguars’ top five tacklers.
