2021 Snapshot: Clinton-Massie
- Updated: June 25, 2021
Perhaps the most difficult job in 2020 was being the statistician for Clinton-Massie football. The Falcons averaged 51.7 points and 438.7 yards of total offense (392.3 rushing) per game. That gig may not get any easier this fall as the team returns players that accounted for 97.8% of those yards and 80.1% of those points. This squad is a legitimate contender to win the Division IV state title.
There are hurdles that will need to be cleared before Clinton-Massie can even think about hoisting that championship trophy in Canton. The road to the Region 16 title still runs through Wyoming, who has won the last three regional crowns.
Then there is a killer schedule that the Falcons must get through if they want to make the playoffs for a 20th consecutive season.
To say the slate is tough, is an understatement. Clinton-Massie only has three home games and will play eight schools that are larger than they are. The Falcons will face two Division II schools (Anderson and Harrison) and six Division III teams including a road tilt at 2020 state runner-up, St. Francis DeSales.
Clinton-Massie will be battle-tested and tough as nails by the time the postseason starts. The Falcons will be more than ready for anything they face in the playoffs.
Division IV, Region 16
2020 RECORD: 9-1, 5-0 SBAAC American
COACH: Dan McSurley (236-63 at Clinton-Massie, 25 years; 256-83 overall, 29 years)
TOP RETURNEES
Carson Vanhoose, Sr, RB – It was an amazing junior year for Vanhoose. He ran for 1,498 yards, racked up 1,897 all-purpose yards and found the end zone 33 times (30 rush, two KRs, one rec). That effort led to OPSWA Division IV First Team All-Ohio (RB), Third Team All-TriState Football (RS), TriState Football Dayton Offensive Player of the Year finalist and the SBAAC American Player of the Year honors. Vanhoose has accrued 3,295 all-purpose yards, 2,414 yards rushing and 42 touchdowns (39 rush, two KRs, one rec), in his career.
Colton Trampler, Sr, RB/LB – A very productive player on both sides of the ball. Trampler ran for 648 yards with four touchdowns and had one-and-a-half sacks in 2020. He was named OPSWA Division IV Second Team All-Ohio (LB).
Kody Zantene, Sr, QB/DB – Back for his third year as a starter, Zantene is the conductor of the offense and the leader of the secondary. He was named Second Team All-Southwest District (DB), as a junior. Zantene has amassed 1,406 yards of total offense (843 pass, 563 rush), accounted for 22 touchdowns (11 rush, 10 pass, one IR) and picked off a pair of passes, in his career.
Carter Frank, Sr, RB/DB – Teams with Vanhoose, Trampler and Zantene to make one of the most explosive backfields in Division IV. Despite playing in just five games as a junior, Frank still managed to run for 563 yards, amass 735 all-purpose yards, find the end zone 14 times (13 rush, one rec) and snare three interceptions. He was named First Team All-SBAAC American for the work.
Carter Euton, Sr, WR/DB – A rock solid performer in all three phases of the game for the Falcons. Euton was a Second Team All-SBAAC American honoree, in 2020.
Blake Ireland, Sr, WR/DB – Like Euton, Ireland is a vital cog on offense, defense and special teams. He was named Second Team All-SBAAC American, as a junior.
Charles Hale, Sr, OL/DL – A staple in the trenches on both sides of the ball. Hale had two-and-a-half sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery, as a junior. He was a Second Team All-SBAAC American selection.
Daelin Maple, Sr, RB/DE – Even though he played in just six games last fall, Maple still made his presence felt. He ran for 269 yards, averaged 10.0 yards per carry and had a pair of sacks. Maple was named Honorable Mention All-SBAAC American.
Dawson Conley, Sr, TE/DE – More of a blocker than receiver but a red zone threat that needs to be accounted for. Conley had five receptions for 95 yards and three touchdowns on his way to Honorable Mention All-SBAAC American accolades as a junior.
