It doesn’t matter how many players are lost to graduation or positions that need to be filled on a yearly basis you can always bank on Springboro teams led by head coach Ryan Wilhite to be a handful to deal with. The Panthers have only had two losing seasons in his 16 years at the helm and none in the last 10 campaigns.

Springboro will look to its experienced defense to set the tone. Expect the Panthers to improve on the on the 22.8 points that they allowed in 2021.

On offense, Springboro will be adjusting to a having a quarterback that can run as well as pass in its spread attack. “We’ll be a different style of team offensively than in previous years with a dual threat quarterback rather than a drop back guy like we’ve played with in most seasons. We are excited for the challenge,” Wilhite states.

The GWOC is as deep as it has ever been. Getting through that gauntlet in conference play isn’t going to be easy. When the smoke clears Springboro should still be marching to the playoffs for the ninth time in the last 11 seasons.

Division I, Region 4
2021 RECORD: 5-5, 4-3 GWOC
COACH: Ryan Wilhite (107-58 at Springboro, 16 years; 107-58 overall)

Connor Smith, Jr, LB – Had a breakout sophomore campaign with 89 total tackles and one-and-a-half sacks. Smith was named OPSWA Division I Honorable Mention All-Southwest District for his efforts.

Matthew Appel, Sr, OL – The leader up front of a young o-line. The 6-foot-4, 240-pound Appel was named Second Team All-GWOC as a junior. He has verbally committed to Navy.

Cade Lamb, Sr, WR/DB – Stepped up as a junior and will be a vital cog in the Panthers secondary. Lamb was named Second Team All-GWOC last fall.

Wyatt Standifer, Jr, DB – We would expect nothing less from this namesake than to be a beast on defense. Standifer recorded 56 total tackles on his way to being a Special Mention All-GWOC selection as a sophomore.

OTHER RETURNEES
Allan Hopkins, Sr, WR – Will be one of Ruzzo’s top targets this fall. Hopkins has 54 receptions for 565 yards and four touchdowns in his career.

Camren Messinger, Sr, DL – The coaching staff is counting on Messinger to be a leader for the Panthers defense. He has 27 total tackles and three sacks as a letterman.

NEWCOMERS
Juniors WR Maxim Butler, DB Sylas Cunningham and sophomore LB Aiden Weimer are looking to make an impact at the varsity level. Butler had six receptions in four games a year ago.
