2023 TSF Kentucky OPOY: Brody Benke

He was a touchdown making machine, Highlands senior Brody Benke turned in one of the most productive and prolific offensive seasons ever by a player in Northern Kentucky Beechwood. His work saw him be named the TriState Football Kentucky Offensive Player of the Year, as TSF paid tribute to the area’s finest from Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky, Dayton and Southeast Indiana at the Year in Review Show on Monday night, in front of a packed house at the Holy Grail in downtown Cincinnati.

Benke was the centerpiece of a Highlands (12-2) offense that helped the program get back to the state semifinals for the first time in eight years. He accounted for 55 touchdowns (26 pass, 23 rush, six rec), threw for 1,849 yards, ran for 1,176 yards and had 14 receptions for 206 yards. The Bluebirds topped the 50-point mark seven times in their last eight regular season games (40 points in the other contest). Benke’s efforts also earned him NKFCA Class 5A, District 6 Player of the Year, DII All-NKY (ATH), KFCA Top 26 and First Team All-TSF (QB) accolades.

Benke, who has signed with Middle Tennessee State ends his career with 4,496 yards passing, 1,431 yards rushing, 23 receptions for 272 yards and 95 touchdowns (55 pass, 31 rush, nine rec).

The other Kentucky Offensive Player of the Year finalists were seniors Kaydon Custard (Harrison County), Evan Pitzer (Covington Catholic), Aba Selm (Simon Kenton), Demetrick Welch (Newport Central Catholic), juniors Clay Hayden (Beechwood), Isaiah Johnson (Cooper) and sophomore Cam O’Hara (Cooper). This it the second finalist nomination for Welch.

TriStateFootball.com was founded in 2005 and started its postseason awards in 2007. In the 17-year history of the award Selm is the first lineman to be named a TSF NKY Offensive Player of the Year finalist.  Benke is just the second Bluebird to be named the TSF NKY Offensive Player of the Year (Patrick Towles, 2010 & ’11).
