DLS No. 1 in Media Top 25

The legendary program at De La Salle (Concord, CA) opens the 2015 season atop the Media Compilation Top 25.

The Spartans won the Compilation Title in 2012 and with its slate of games this year could go wire-to-wire with an unblemished season.

AntoineCuster200It opens with Euless Trinity (TX) — which received votes — and has games with Orange Lutheran (CA), Servite (Anaheim, CA), and Long Beach Poly (CA) prior to the playoffs that will ultimately conclude with a game against one of Centennial (Corona, CA), St. John Bosco (Bellflower, CA), or Bishop Amat (La Puente, CA) which came in at Nos. 8, 10, and 21, respectively.

The Media Compilation takes into account the four most respected human polls, the top computer model, and an emerging hybrid human-algorithm to make for the best rankings in the country.

Those under consideration are the NationalHSFootball.com HSFB100; USAToday Super 25; MaxPreps Xcellent25; PrepNation Top 25; Jeff Fisher’s Top 25 and the Freeman Computer Top 25.

For a mathematically sound compilation each team is given points from 40 to 16 for being inside the Top 25 of each of those six polls with no points awarded for any additional rankings due to the differing size of each poll.

Points are assigned in decreasing value starting with 40 being awarded for No. 1 and on down to 16 for No. 25 which will result in a more accurate representation of the polls. Assigning points starting at 1 point would skew the tally in the instance that a team received a single, high placement versus a team with lower placements in multiple polls, raising the baseline eliminates the outlier impact in the compilation.

The poll will be updated and released each Tuesday of the football season.

De La Salle (Concord, CA) 2 1 1 5 1 11
The Spartans will be tested right out of the gate with a showdown against Euless Trinity (TX). Trinity only received a No. 23 vote in Jeff Fisher’s poll but has long been respected in Texas. Truly, aside from Katy this may be the best test De La Salle could have received in Texas as the Trinity style of play provides a challenging pairing compared to other programs that use the spread and a bend-don’t-break approach to defense.
2

221

Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, NV) 10 4 3 2 3 3
Bishop Gorman claimed the Media Compilation Title last season despite winning just two of six major titles. This season the Gaels open in striking distance of another title and the program has the schedule to climb back into the top spot with a handful of difficult games against Top 25 teams.
3

209

St. Thomas Aquinas (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) 3 5 16 3 8 2
St. Thomas Aquinas won a National Title in 2008 and has come close a number of times since. This year the Raiders do not have an out-of-state tilt to swing perception and will have to rely on what the in-state teams on its schedule can do. It could hold wins over multiple state champions within Florida to end most debates about its placement.
4

208

Miami Central (Florida) 5 3 2 6 4 18
The three teams ahead of Miami Central are expected to be balanced while the Rockets will be defense-heavy and hoping that its power offense can win games while it works on a passing attack to find that balance. It is too bad it and Aquinas could not get a game done this year after talks stalled early in the process.
5

202

DeSoto (Texas) 7 8 5 4 5 15
Could this be the season that DeSoto breaks through with a state title? If the Eagles can run the table it would have wins over No. 6 IMG, No. 7 Allen, and No. 16 Cedar Hill. With that resume it could push to the top spot.
6

201

IMG Academy (Bradenton, FL) 6 2 7 9 20 1
The controversial program was not shutout of any of the polls which could either validate what it is doing or cause an uproar if it goes unbeaten and moves towards the top spot. The talent is undeniable but the product is still to be seen. Can all the stars come together? Before Shea Patterson arrived to be the quarterback it was unlikely. His leadership makes it much more plausible.
7

198

Allen (Texas) 13 11 10 7 2 5
Allen will have a stronger defense from last year with most every starter returning and the bend-don’t-break could turn into a force. The offense has a lot of turnover but a strong OL could ease in the season. The schedule works in its favor — until the playoffs, then look out.
8

186

Centennial (Corona, CA) 9 7 6 15 6 17
There may be no more explosive offenses in the entire country. Centennial returns an impressive lot of talent on the scoring side of the program and this is a definitive offense-first program. The goal to outscore opponents has largely worked as the Huskies have been one of the most successful teams in California — and the country — the last 15-plus years.
9

171

DeMatha (Hyattsville, MD) 12 6 14 16 21 6
There is no question that the Stags bring back a ton of talent. The issue is that it lost some games that many think it shouldn’t have last year. There is also the perception that still lingers from the last time DeMatha was ranked this high and it was blown up on television by St. Joseph Regional (Montvale, NJ). An opener with Miami Central will tell the tale if this team is a National Title threat or not.
10

165

St. John Bosco (Bellflower, CA) 1 13 15 1 10
One of the most curious splits in the Top 10 has St. John Bosco with two No. 1 placements from human pollsters but the CalPreps model — which has named a California team its national champion the last four years — doesn’t have the Braves in the Top 25. The schedule will sort this out as trip to Oregon, New Jersey, and potential showdowns with No. 1 De La Salle and No. 8 Corona Centennial loom.
11

145

Katy (Texas) 4 11 14 12 19
The exclusion of Katy in the USAToday rankings stand out like a sore thumb — especially as the paper is ranking teams like Webb City (MO). The Tigers have the most talent the program has had in some time and many are expecting big things. This team should be a unanimously ranked group in no time.
12

144

Archer (Lawrenceville, GA) 11 12 4 19 15
Many expect this team to play for a state title in Georgia. It opens with an impressive run of games and will have to close with one of the five hardest playoff divisions across the country. An unblemished season seems unlikely but one-loss and a state title could push it toward the Top 10 in December.
13

129

Mallard Creek (Charlotte, NC) 8 8 12 7
Mallard Creek will take on two of the top teams in North Carolina, one from South Carolina, and another from Maryland/D.C. It isn’t the schedule that many will look as a national title worthy run, but the talent is there and if the results match, look for the Mavericks to move up rapidly.
14

126

Chandler (Arizona) 14 20 17 20 8
There is some concern over the change at quarterback but the defense steadily improved last year and much of that talent returns. A repeat of a state title and Top 15 finish nationally could be in the works for the Wolves.
15

124

Colquitt County (Moultrie, GA) 23 16 8 9 25
The offense will be good the defense could be patchwork. The Packers have had an awful offseason with the arrest of a teammate and the tragic loss of an assistant coach. That first game will be one of the most therapeutic three hours of the year. Most everyone should be a Hawg come Friday night.
16

116

Cedar Hill (Texas) 16 9 10 13
It is going to be hard for head coach Joey McGuire to play the ‘no respect’ card with his kids as the Longhorns come in at No. 16 nationally. There was tremendous turnover in the offseason but most just expect this next group to be as successful as the last. An exciting quarterback and explosive offense figures to light up the scoreboard.
17

108

Manvel (Texas) 24 22 20 22 9
Manvel comes in at No. 5 in Texas, which is still good for No. 17 in the country. If that isn’t respect for the brand of football being played in Texas there is nothing else the media can do. The offense will score on most anyone, the defense has improved. The question will still come down to a showdown with Katy. Can the Mavericks get passed the mental hurdle of downing the Tigers?
18t

105

Clay-Chalkville (Pinson, AL) 22 18 21 21 19
The offense brings back its QB, top two WRs, and a RB that was forced into action last year. That means it is bad news for teams looking to find their footing in the early going against the Cougars because points will be scored in a hurry.
18t

105

Ocean Lakes (Virginia Beach, VA) 19 17 12 11
Neither computer-based model likes the Dolphins entering the season. The team brings back too much talent to ignore. The state of Virginia figures to be tough at the top and this program could ride that tide to a Top 10 finish as perception starts to shift about programs in this state.
20

98

Paramus Catholic (New Jersey) 18 15 17 16
The out-of-state record for the top teams in Jersey is impossible to ignore and as such the benefit of the doubt has started going to the top teams in the state. Paramus Catholic will have a very strong defense this year and its offense has the talent to develop into a legit operation. The schedule is no joke and results will dictate how high the Paladins go — or if a different teams from the Garden State takes this mantle.
21

97

Bishop Amat (La Puente, CA) 15 24 24 4
Amat burst onto the scene last year by crushing Texas 5A champions Aledo and then had a solid season in California, finishing in the Top 50 of the HSFB100. This year the expectations are higher for the Lancers as the No. 4 team from the state.
22

92

Mainland (Daytona Beach, FL) 19 23 17 13
In a curious flip in perception the sites that were last on the Mainland train last year are higher on the Bucs than the HSFB100 and USAToday, which were first and second on board last year. The defense is still there but the offense is worrisome. The schedule will answer some questions.
23

90

South Panola (Bateville, MS) 23 25 14 12
South Panola will open without its starting quarterback who is recovering from an offseason knee injury. The Tigers will be able to ground and pound opponents until health returns. Mississippi football has continued to evolve and what used to be an assumption that South Panola was going to win the state has become a pretty stout playoff path.
24

80

Colerain (Cincinnati, OH) 20 10 13
The state of Ohio is going to sort itself out this year but in the early going a few sites have tabbed Colerain for the top spot. The team has a solid offense — with an explosive quarterback — and its young defense that opened last year should be tested and better this year. Those are two big assumptions that will get tested before September is over.
25

67

Bingham (South Jordan, UT) 13 18 25
The Miners gained a lot of respect last season in pushing Bishop Gorman to overtime and representing well in Florida. Despite losing both games it was validation of the quality program that has been built in Utah. The team lost some talent but added a transfer quarterback and is still expected to win the state. A rematch with Bishop Gorman could be a good measuring stick.
