Colerain squeaks past Warren Central

CINCINNATI, Oh – It was well worth the wait after an extended halftime break at Nippert Stadium Saturday afternoon. The Colerain Cardinals came from behind and defeated the Warren Central Warriors 31-28 in the Skyline Chili Crosstown Showdown.

Warren Central took 28-24 lead with 3:31 left to play in the game Colerain threw an interception on the ensuing drive and were left for dead.

The Colerain defense held Warren Central and received the ball back on a with 1:20 left on the clock. A punt return by Amir Riep gave Colerain excellent field position. A clutch 17-yard reception by Keontae Jones and a key pass interference penalty on Warren Central put the Cardinals on the 10-yard line.

Monalo Caldwell took the carry and barreled into the end zone for the deciding touchdown.

Midway through the halftime break a storm rolled through Clifton and Nippert Stadium was the scene of a downpour of rain. To make things worse lightning was detected within a 15-mile radius of the stadium causing an official weather delay.

After two seperate delays that lasted a total of just over two hours the second half finally got under way.

Colerain head coach Tom Bolden said his team relaxed during the delay.

“My kids we’re singing to the music, a Creedence (Clearwater Revival). I was dancing a little bit,” said a smiling Bolden.

Warren Central took the opening kickoff, going three-and-out and punting to Colerain. The Cardinals put together an 11-play, 91-yard drive, putting the first points on the scoreboard. Deante Smith Moore capped the drive with a 35-yard touchdown run.

Colerain went for the knockout blow on the ensuing Warren Central drive. Ivan Pace, Jr, picked up a fumble by Warriors quarterback Zach Summeier and raced 46 yards to the end zone for a touchdown.

Warren Central settled down despite trailing 14-0, putting together an impressive 8-play drive. The big blow was a 59-yard catch and run by Dean Tate. Tristen Tonte plunged three yards into the end zone take cut Colerain’s lead in half 14-7.

The Warriors tied the game in the second quarter when Summeier threw a six-yard scoring pass to Tate.

Colerain went into the locker room with a lead thanks to 29-yard field goal by Ryan Murray with 1:25 left in the first half.

Colerain will be on the road next week against the St. Xavier Bombers. Warren Central will travel to city rival North Central next week.
