Cincinnati Round-Up: Mason pulls upset

Round two of the OHSAA playoffs saw a defensive masterpiece from Mason and some Firebirds fly to victory in our Cincinnati round-up.

DIVISION I, REGION 4

NO. 3 LAKOTA WEST 24, NO 6. ELDER 14

Lakota West extended their winning streak to eight games with a tough win over visiting Elder on Friday night. The Firebirds used a stingy second half defense and efficient offense to advance to the regionals for the fourth consecutive season. Lakota West erased a 11-point first half deficit and completely dominated the second half of the ball game.

West got strong games from several players in the win. Quarterback Sam Wiles was a big threat in the running game for the Firebirds. Wiles rushed for 125 yards and a touchdown to lead the charge. He was also 9/11 for 73 yards through the air. Braydon Johnson had 12 carries for 51 yards and a touchdown and Cordell Atkins added another score in the win.

Elder was led by Ryan Brass who passed for 194 yards and a score. Josh Mirus caught 5 passes for 76 yards and a score. Brass also rushed for 69 yards and a score on the ground in the loss.

NO. 1 MILFORD 9, NO. 9 MASON 10

The Mason Comets went on the road and pulled off the upset of Milford on Friday night. The Comets used a stellar defensive effort to slow the high powered offense of the Eagles. Defense and special teams proved to be the winning factor for Mason. Late in the third quarter, Tyler Dalton blocked a Milford punt that was scooped and scored by Kai Woofolk for the winning margin. The Comets controlled the game by rushing 42 times for 118 yards and great clock management.

Top-seeded Milford could not get anything going on the offensive side of the ball against the stout Comet defense. They were held to 50 yards rushing on the night. The ECC champs could not carry the firepower they displayed last week into this week’s matchup as they came up short at home. The Eagles came into the game averaging 37 PPG but could only muster one touchdown on the night in the loss.

Anderson tailback Brodey Berg had three touchdown runs on the night. Berg has 28 touchdowns on the season as he has made a living getting into the end zone. Trace Jallick caught two touchdown passes and Justice Burnam passed for two scores to lead the Raptors in the win. Anderson advances to the regionals looking to push through into the state final four.

NO. 3 WITHROW 16, NO. 6 WINTON WOODS 7

The Withrow Tigers are moving on to the round of 16 after surviving a battle with the Winton Woods Warriors. With the win, the Tigers put an end to the Warriors quest to repeat as state champion. Withrow won with an airtight defense and an offense that made all the plays when they needed to.

The Tigers raced out to a 13-0 lead and were able to make enough plays to hold off the Warriors. Demetrius Howard had a big night on the ground for Withrow. He also added a touchdown run. Luke Dunn led the charge offensively for the orange and black as well. He connected with Chris Henry Jr. on several occasions for big plays.

Zae Jennings had a great night on the ground for Winton Woods in a losing effort.

With the win Badin advanced to the regionals for the third consecutive season and are 10-2 in the last three postseasons. The Rams are seeking to make it back to state after a runner-up finish in 2021.

Carson Cheek caught a 77-yard touchdown pass from Alex Ritzie and Lem Grayson rushed for two scores to pace the Rams. The Badin defense continued their strong season as they only gave up six points on the night. They are allowing an average on 3 PPG this postseason.
